Sorry Jane I missed your name:)

UVERDE Rummage Sale to raise funds for our non profit organization
May 1st, 9am to 12pm, sale will be held in front of DIF (across from Tio Pablo's Restaurant)
This is a great opportunity to clean out those closets and cabinets and donate your "extra stuff" to be sold for a great cause!!!
Please drop off the "goods" at La Casa de Vos, in the reception area for Vos en Construction 141-0069

UVERDE is dedicated to increasing awareness and helping our community take care of our beautiful environment.

Current projects include:
1. "Clean up Los Barriles", this event takes place at least twice a year: Mid November to show community spirit and prepare for the Fiestas de Noviembre and again in April to celebrate Earth Day with the Rotary Club
2. Local businesses and individuals "adopt" an area to maintain litter free
3. Educational Programs in the local primary school. This year we we have managed to join forces with the high school students from Santiago. A group of young individuals has come forward to learn more about environmental awareness and help us spread the word amongst in the schools. Thank you East Cape Guild for helping us make this happen! During the 2008-2009 school year a group of fifth graders produced the following slogan: THE FUTURE OF THE WORLD IN YOUR HANDS; PUT TRASH IN ITS PLACE!
4. Rotary Club donated 260 canvas bags that were taken to the primary school where the students decorated them, took them to their moms to use at the grocery store instead of the dreaded plastic bolsas. Keep your eyes open for these beauties when you are out shopping.
5. Recycling, Thank you Lynn Mirassou and Theresa Comber for coming forward to organize this program, we thank you both for your energy and efforts to create this much needed program.

This is just the beginning!

Upcoming projects include:
6. Cow & dog proof garbage cans
7. Education regarding carpooling and driving less
8. Reforrestation
Ghandi said, “Be the change you wish to see in the world”. That is what we are doing.

BANKING IN MEXICO (Please stick to the facts and no opinions. Thank you!! Cheryl)

a. Please be advised that at BBVA Bancomer we are receiving dollars in cash to
our clients, as well as changing them with a special exchange rate on line.
Even when we are still doing these type of operations, we encourage our
clients not to use cash in dollars because in all places the payments have
to be in pesos.
Depositing dollars in cash into your accounts is taxable since April 2009
and now the law changed and more than 15.000 pesos or equivalent in US
dollars are taxable with the 3%. Avoid carrying dollars in cash with you
use your debit cards or checks instead. Also through our on line service
you can do any transaction not involving cash (such us payment of utilities,
transfer to third parties, payment of taxes, etc.)
BBVA BANCOMER Mexico welcomes you to make our home, yours.
Thanks a lot!

b. You can deposit cash up to the equivalent of 15000 pesos per month without getting the retention (it’s not a tax). If you deposit more the government holds back 2% (not 3 or 4%) and you can get that back as a refund by filing a return with Hacienda in April if you have no large income for the year.
There is no limit on how many checks you can deposit. In your dollar account. I deposited three checks yesterday for a total of almost $4000.00. No retention.
The cash deposit situation is a bit of a pain in the butt for business owners but we are very glad to see the government at least trying to get some of the taxes from these people who have never paid a penny and placed the burden on local business.
I fail to see how this is a nail in any coffin especially for tourism. (unsigned)

c. The changes are due to the new IDE tax levied on all cash deposits
over 15,000 pesos which at present is about $ 1,200 the tax is charged
each month you exceed the floor amount in either dollars or pesos
Banamex is trying to make it easy for gringos by using the amount of
$1,000 each month due to exchange rate fluctuations.. (unsigned)

d. Can someone confirm if Mexican Banks will no longer take US dollars in exchange for Pesos over the counter, even if you have a passport. Reply to MEBerman@cox.net

e. Below are responses received with regard to the notice on BPE last week:
“EFFECTIVE April 15th, 2010 we hear that the Mexican Govt. has instructed ALL BANKS IN MEXICO not to exchange ANY cash US dollars into pesos regardless of whether you have an FM2/3 or passport.”
The information is confirmed by Santander and Scotia banks:
The new law applies only to Mexican citizens who seek to exchange US Dollars for Pesos at a bank where they do not have an account. This is because of a taxation issue for Mexican citizens. They can exchange at a bank at which they do have an account. If they have the correct tax identification they may also use money exchanges.

f. I spoke with Noelia at Bancomer and also with the manager at Banamex. This is what I was told:
The information I sent on the 15th regarding exchanging cash dollars for pesos was not entirely accurate.
This is what I have been able to clarify.
The change in policy was not government required. Individual banks have differing policies regarding changing money.
What is true is that, at least Banamex, Bancomer, and HSBC will not accept cash dollars and change them into pesos.

Banamex:
Allows cash dollars to be deposited into dollar accounts. You can then withdraw money and take your withdrawal in pesos.
Will not allow cash dollars to be deposited into peso accounts. Will not exchange cash dollars into pesos

Bancomer:
Allows cash dollars to be deposited into both dollar and peso accounts. You can withdraw money in pesos.
Will not accept dollars from people without accounts and change them into pesos.

HSBC: is the same, I think, as BAnamex

The money exchange houses will exchange cash dollars for pesos.
Gas stations will accept payment in either dollars or pesos.
Markets, like Chapitos, will accept payment in dollars at a reduced rate of exchange.
Hope this helps, Martha

HOSPITAL EXPERIENCES

a. My daughter had to be seen at the Amerimed Hospital in Cabo and my experience with the insurance was: If you were hospitalized for 24 hours or more then the hospital can directly bill your insurance. If you are hospitalized for 24 hours or less, you are responsible to pay the bill at the time of your visit and then your insurance would reimburse you. My daughter was seen for less than 24 hours and the hospital provided all the necessary paper work for me to file with my insurance for reimbursement. It's that simple. They were very professional and are a blessing to have here in Baja. Sounds to me the previous post just had a small misunderstanding. Debbie Chinn debbiechinn@yahoo.com  (signed!!)

b. Does anyone out there in Ponyland have a Spanish version of Windows XP? A high school student here in Los Barriles has been given a laptop but she can't use it because it is the English version of Windows XP. She's working on her English but isn't that far along yet. If you have the operating system she needs and are willing to donate it, please contact Sandy at 141-0429 or migrator.sandy@gmail.com
