I received some sad news today. One of our old timers of the East Cape
area Joe Minto of La Ribera passed away in San Diego CA today. He
has bee n sick for quite awhile and I guess the old body finally
gave out. He and I first came to the East Cape area almost 30 years
ago and we have really seen some changes since then. I don't have
any information about what kind of services will be held other than
I know it has always been his wish to be cremated and have his ashes
placed in the Sea of Cortez. If I hear any more details I will pass
them on, Gracias Baja Fred

Cabo Pulmo Reef - We are very proud to announce that we have just
been advised that SEMARNAT has revoked the permits for the mega
development known as Cabo Cortez that threatens the Cabo Pulmo Reef.
The developers seek to build 7816 homes, 3655 hotel rooms, a 490
slip marina, 2 golf courses, 5000 employee residences, an airport
and commercial areas all right next to the Cabo Pulmo reef a UNESCO
World Heritage Natural Site. This is a great victory for those of us
who love the reef and believe that a sustainable tourism model is
possible.

We want to thank you for all of your support. Whether you helped
spread the word or helped us collect signatures, congratulations are
deserved by us all. This was, above all, a collective achievement.
Recognition should also be given to the accurate and timely decision
by SEMARNAT, which showed a welcome sensibility to the voice of
civil society. We should be filled by hope in knowing that the voice
of organized citizens is capable of creating great changes, when
backed up by sound science and presented in a respectful way,
through the appropriate institutional channels.
Cabo Cortés, as would be the case with any person or company, has
the right to request these environmental permits again, be it with
the project we know, or a modified version. We trust that, if they
so decide, more attention will be paid to the information they
present to the public, to the voice of the local community and to
the current planning instruments for the region. A huge
congratulations to Pedro Zapata and the supporters of Cabo Pulmo

Hola Compadres! It's that time of year again amigos . . . . Are you
ready for some Football? Smokey's will once again be hosting an
online football pool and anyone interested can join in the fun. The
pool is called SMOKEY'S PICKEM and is being hosted on a website
called
www.officefootballpool.com. The cost is $115 for the
season. That's $5 per week (17 weeks / $85), a one time $10 admin
fee, and $20 in the pot to be paid out at year's end to the top
three players. Please note Smokey's Grill and Cantina makes NO MONEY
for hosting the pool! It is also important to note that I,
Smokedoggydogg am a Player who is eligible to earn money but in the
three previous years of hosting the pool, I have never won a weekly
payout (Ouch)!
*Admin fee covers cost paid to hosting website, and postage and
money orders regarding payouts in the States, etc.
It's very easy to join and play. Here is how it works. You simply
log on once a week from anywhere in the world and make your picks.
You pick the winner of each game (including point spreads). You then
assign each game a number between 1-16 (when there's 16 games), or
3-16 (once bye weeks begin). You want to assign the higher numbers
to games you have most confidence in. If you win the game, you get
the corresponding points. So, the winner is the highest scorer, not
necessarily the player with the most wins. You can change your picks
at any time prior to game time of first games played.
Players can also set autopick options in case they are unable to get
to a computer to make their picks. Autopick options include
Favorites, Underdogs, Home Teams, Road Teams, and Random. Players
can also take advantage of professional game and team analyisis on
the site. Feel free to "Trash Talk" to other players too.
We pay winners out weekly. For Baja California Sur players, we pay
out in cash at Smokey's. Amount depends on number of players, i.e.
30 players = $150 weekly payout, 40 players = $200 weekly payout, 50
players = $250 weekly payout, etc.
Regarding the season-end jackpot, First Place earns 50%, Second
Place earns 35%, and Third Place earns 15%. Again, total jackpot
amount determined by number of players, i.e. 30 players = $600, 40
players = $800, 50 players = $1000,
Pool fees must be paid in full prior to first game of the season
(Thurs., Sept. 9th)!
Remember, you do not have to be a professional gambler to play. In
fact, my mother-in-law is usually good for a couple of wins per year
and she usually just lets her grandchildren make her picks! You are
welcome to invite any friends or aquaintances who may be interested
in playing. For Baja California Sur players, pool fees can be paid
at Smokey's Grill & Cantina. To join, follow the instructions below.
Pool Rules are posted within the pool itself but I'll post those
again via a poolwide e-mail
