The drawing for the year's worth of near-the-airport parking which
was donated to the East Cape Guild by Dominic was held today at
Roadrunner's cafe. Ruben was asked to assist and drew number 42
which was one of the squares purchased by Jane Perry.
Congratulations to Jane and thanks to all of you who helped to fund
scholarships for local students by buying one or more of the
squares.
Mark you calendars for the Guild's fun fall activities: Monte Carlo
Night will be held November 13 and Baja Ha Ha Golf will be held
November 27. Watch the BPE this fall for details on these fun
events.

TRAVEL REPORTS
a. We departed Los Barriles on Sunday July 13, and drove
through Constitution. No sign of a single police vehicle.(must all
be off work on Sunday).
On Monday morning, traveling north on highway 1, north of Ensenada,
traveling through the mountains, we noticed a lot of smoke from a
fire. As we proceeded along, with traffic going both ways, we sudden
found ourselves driving into a wildfire, with winds blowing the
flames rapidly up the mountain side, along side the road, licking at
our tires, and attempting to jump the road. We were very fortunate
to come through unharmed, but we fear there were many vehicles
trapped. There were no emergency vehicles to direct traffice, and
the vehicles continued to travel along. After traveling for about 15
minutes we did see one fire truck heading in that direction, with 2
police cars 10 minutes behind. If anyone has any information on this
wildfire, would they please let us know. Annette and Ivan

b. It happened again. Being cognizant of
the trouble in C.C. I paid very close attention when driving through
today. Drove in the “thru lane” and never went over 40 kmph. Stopped
at every light and easy to miss stop signs. We just passed the last
light and as I looked in the rearview mirror I saw the local policia
screaming down the street. He pulled me over. I couldn’t quite
understand what he was accusing me of. Either running an orange
light or didn’t yield for a woman crossing the street. Neither of
which were true. I wonder if they have spotters? I told him this was
not the case, but he told me that I’d have to surrender my drivers’
license and could pick it up the next day at the police station
after I paid a $700 peso fine. I told him that I could not come back
the next day and he said I could pay a $500 peso fine to him on the
spot and of course get my license back, on the spot. During this
conversation he was fiddling with his machine gun and since I didn’t
want to be delayed any longer I paid him the $500 peso fine and
asked for a receipt, as I didn’t want to be pulled over and fined
again. He gave me one, on it he claimed his name was Joaquin Valades
and it said to offer assistance and facilitate me to all that I
present the receipt to. And his badge number was (he made a point of
this) 007! Perfect! So now I know where James Bond retired.

I need to renew my FM3, but I've seen here on BPE that they are
replacing our booklet with a card. And yet there's been no
definitive word on how this works, or what it takes to do it. I
renew my booklet in Cabo, do I just walk in with the same paperwork
required and they'll issue a card, or how does it work? How long
does it take? Just getting my renewal each year takes weeks, and
that's longer than I can ever stay, which makes it a headache. ANY
INFO on what's going on or how it works would be REALLY appreciated.
