Is anyone flying from San Jose to Vancouver BC in the next couple
weeks who would be willing to help a sweet dog get to her new home?
We will provide the crate and cover her travel costs but she will
need someone to see her through customs. Her new owners will be
waiting for her at the airport in Vancouver.
Your help would be greatly appreciated.

East Cape Community Urgent Care Clinic, Donotario AC, is in need of
Donations
We have launched the Children’s Dental School Program and Medical
Clinic Diabetic Program this year with great success. We are in
desperate need of toothbrushes, sample size toothpaste, dental
floss, Insulin Syringes, One Touch Ultra Glucometers and One Touch
Ultra Test strips, small stuffed animals ( beanie babies are best)
AND of course $$$ Monetary donations for other medical issues and
medication. Over the summer we were able to provide free treatment
to over 200 children in the Dental Clinic and in the Medical Clinic
screened and assisted 100 Diabetics. Now with the new school season
we are running low on these donations generously provided by our
community last season. When making the trip to the East Cape for the
fall/winter months, if you would please help with these much needed
supplies. Drop off points are East Cape Community Dental clinic
located in #1 Plaza de Pueblo and Medical Clinic located within
Amerimed Clinic Los Barriles. Our goal is to reach out to even more
children and Diabetics to assist with their care. As always, we
appreciate your generosity and have a safe trip.
Muchas Gracias

MEDIVAC DISCUSSION
a. I suggest that the person inquiring about MEDIVAC to Canada
should contact MEDJET ASSIST @
www.medjet.com or call them toll free 1-800-527-7478.
Their coverage is very broad. I have subscribed to their system for
years and fortunately have not had occasion to use it, but I know
three families who have and are very pleased with their service.
PET DISCUSSION
a. To answer Maurice: I believe the person that posted about changes
coming into Baja with pets was flying. We drive back and forth. For
the last 5 yrs, coming and going, no one has ever asked to see
papers for our dog(s). But it is wise to carry them.
lromeosmom@yahoo.com
b. To all Ponyland pet lovers with inquiring minds:
The email posting we sent along from the Mexican Consulate in
Portland, OR was just that, no more. For further information
regarding our circumstances:
1. We fly and drive but we were referring to flying in this exchange
2. We travel with our cat
3. We had a rabies certificate that was good from 2008 to 2011 that
the man at the airport (at security) would not accept it, stating it
had to be every year in MX...but...when we offered him $20 instead
of having to be detained and a local vet called and having them come
to the airport to do whatever they wanted them to do (this changes
all the time), he took it and we went on our way. We do not
encourage or like to result to bribery but considering the
alternatives.....
It has become increasingly difficult to travel with our cat because
as soon as we think we have her papers in order, we run in to laws
or regs that have changed or are interpreted differently by
someone....rather they be Mexican or American. They seem to
continuously change... Food in the carrier...food out of the carrier
(American customs), etc. This trip, we will have a one year
vaccination document for rabies, a health certificate that has been
issued within 72 hours and food in the pocket of the carrier.

ELECTRIC METER DISCUSSION
Regarding this new miracle device that's going to save you big $$$
on your light bill:
The hype being presented about this new device that's being promoted
as a money saver is both true and false. In reality, the energy
delivered to your house consists of two components--watt-hours and
var-hours. Watts (real power) is the power that does work; i.e., the
power that makes your appliances run, and is what you pay for in
kilowatt-hours. Vars (volt-amperes reactive) provides magnetizing
current to those devices, e.g. motors, which require it, and it is
free--you don't pay for it. The combination of these two is called
volt-amperes. Ideally, for both you and the power company, volt
amperes should equal watts (which means the vars equal zero). Why?
Because vars pull current, and current produces line losses in the
form of heat (heating up your wiring), and you pay for these heat
losses. And these losses go up as the square of the current.
What these "new" devices do is correct the power factor (pf) of your
load (appliances) to one (unity pf). Power factor is a measure of
how much real power (watts) is used compared to the reactive power (vars)
used. Pf = 1 means the load consumes pure watt-hours; pf = 0 means
the load consumes pure var-hours. E.g., if you have an air
conditioner (a/c) that pulls 10 amps at 0.8 pf, only about 8 amps is
consumed by the air conditioner (which you pay for). But the a/c
draws 10 amps, and you pay for the heat losses produced by all 10
amps (instead of 8 amps) in the wires from the electric meter to the
a/c. What these "new" devices do is correct the pf to unity pf at
the appliance; which in this example would drop the a/c amps draw
from 10 amps to 8 amps, and thereby save you 2 amps worth of line
(heat) losses. (Watts lost (which you pay for) equals the amps
squared times the resistance of the wires from the meter to the
appliance. Assuming you have a total of 1 ohm resistance in the
wiring to the meter, your total losses in this case are 10 x 10 x 1
= 100 watts. If the a/c is used 10 hours/day, you will be paying for
1000 watt-hours per day in line losses. This amounts to about 30,000
watt-hours (30 kwh) per month; at 20 cents/kwh you'll be paying
about $6/month just to heat your wiring to the a/c. If you install
this "new" device to get unity pf, you reduce the current draw by 2
amps, and save about $2/mo. in wiring heat losses to the a/c. If you
have 4 similar devices, you'll save about eight bucks a month by
installing these "new" devices.)
Some appliances--in particular old appliances--have low power
factors; most modern appliances have high power factors. If your
appliance has a high power factor, 0.9 or above, you don't need pf
correction; unless you have a very long line from the meter to the
house, or they used too small wires, or both (worst case), any of
which increases the resistance. The losses are proportional to the
resistance, so if you double the resistance, the losses double;
triple the resistance, the losses triple; etc. Also, the resistance
goes down as the wire size goes up; so, the bigger the wire the
better. If you have low pf (0.7 or below) appliances, pf correction
will definitely help. The trick is, before you buy anything, to
measure the pf of each of your appliances, and measure the round
trip resistance of the line from the meter to your house (Line 1 to
neutral, Line 2 to neutral, and Line 1 to Line 2). Line 1 to Line 2
should be a little less ohms than Line 1 or 2 to neutral. This will
tell you where you're at, and you can calculate whether or not
correcting your appliances' pf will save you enough bucks to pay for
the pf correction devices.
There is a device on the market, available on line, called the Kill
a Watt. It plugs directly in to the electrical outlet, and the
appliance plugs in to the Kill a Watt meter. The display can be
selected to show volts, amps, watts, vars, pf, and kwh, and will
give you an accurate reading of how much power your appliance is
using. Unfortunately, this meter is only available for 120 vac
devices, not 240 volts. 240-volt appliance pf must be calculated
from the nameplate data, if they give you enough data. You need
volts (v), amps (a), watts (w), & volt-amps (va). If all the
nameplate has is volts and amps, you can't calculate pf.
pf = watts divided by volt-amps, or pf = watts divided by volts
divided by amps.
The bottom line is find out what you've got first before you go off
and buy expensive devices which may only save you pennies/month.

SPAM DISCUSSION
I read this on the Gmail forum, Cheryl
The more your e-mail address gets harvested by spammers, the more
spam you will receive. There's no way to get off a spammer's list
once you've been added/harvested. Of course you should never reply
to spam or use any "unsubscribe" links in spam. All that does it
confirm your e-mail address as not only valid, but as belonging to
someone who reads the spam. And if the header is forged (as it often
is) then responding to the spam will just annoy some innocent
person.
Also, please use the subject line wisely. It gives me a warm and
fuzzy feeling when the subject matter is up close and personal.
Unique words like BPE, Not Wanted, East Cape, Baja, etc. Words
that only pertain to us and this newsletter. Also, be sure all your
info is in the body of the email because all I do is copy and paste.
Thanks, Cheryl
