Today, Sunday, is the last day for Bocce Ball tickets. Event is on April 15 at Eastcape Casas and R. V. Resort. Don’t miss out on the terrific gifts generously donated by our community for the raffle and silent auction. This is such a fun activity with the proceeds directly supporting our community through the Guild Scholarship Program. Education is the key, so lets all help out.

BAJA NIGHT SKY #60: Lunar Eclipse: A Full Moon, with Mars just above it, and Spica nearby in moonglow, will rise at 7:24pm Monday evening. The Earth casts two conical shadows into space that are more than twice as long as the distance to the moon. All light from the sun is blocked in the inner, shorter shadow or umbra; only a portion of sunlight is blocked in the penumbra, the larger shadow (the bowl of a large spoon held under a table lamp will cast both shadows onto the table). A lunar eclipse occurs when a full Moon passes between the Earth and Sun, and through Earth's umbral shadow. Usually it passes above or below this shadow. Monday evening, when the Full Moon is high in the SE, it enters the penumbra at 10:52pm, and the umbra at 11:58pm. Careful observers might see the penumbral shadow creeping across the Moon. Totality begins at 1:07am Tuesday morning, and lasts for 78 minutes until 2:25am. The moon exits the penumbra at 3:33am. If there are no clouds, there should be a great show all evening; from midnight through totality, fainter stars will appear as the sky slowly darkens. At totality, the eclipsed Moon will be high in the southern sky. Sitting on the horizon below the moon, the Southern Cross will stand upright, visible for a short time in the darker sky. Two fists above the South point on the horizon, the largest, brightest globular cluster orbiting the Milky Way Galaxy, Omega Centauri, gives off a hazy glow. The right and top star of the Southern Cross point to the upper left at this cluster. Telescopes with diameters of 6 inches or more can resolve the glow into a ball of millions of ancient stars. In the SE, Scorpio's tail is sitting on the horizon. To the left of the stinger stars, Ptolemy's Cluster sparkles through binoculars. To the right of Antares, the heart of the scorpion, there is another globular cluster. There are more than 50 other nebulae, star clusters, and galaxies for telescope users to explore in this small region of sky. In a short time, moonlight will once again blot out the fainter objects in the night sky. On March 1, 1504, his men prisoners on a Caribbean island, Columbus frightened Indians into providing them with food and water with the threat of depriving them of the light of the Moon. They laughed at him until the eclipse, which he knew was imminent, began. Early indigenous Mexicans believed the Sun Swallowed the Moon during a lunar eclipse, and made loud noises to stop it. Some people still fear lunar eclipses. If you are superstitious, you might want to take precautions. Cover up wells and remain indoors. If the eclipse lasts longer than you find comfortable, beating on pots and pans with a wooden spoon might bring it to an end. By such means, I have never had to endure a lunar eclipse longer than 100 minutes. Night-Sky Tom BajaNightSky@gmail.com
