BAJA NIGHT SKY #53: 1) Tuesday evening's
moonrise at 8:32pm should be impressive. Look for a very red
Mars, and bluish Spica just above the Moon, rising together in a
rare triangular conjunction. Spica is the 15th brightest star in
the night sky. If it were as close as Sirius, it would be the
brightest by far, 2300 times as luminous as our Sun. It's
actually two stars revolving around a common center every 4
days. Through binoculars, Spica's bluish tint tells us it is
extremely large and hot, some 20,000 degrees Kelvin compared to
our Sun's 5800. 2) There will be a bright Iridium flare high in
the northern sky at 6:58:28 ± 10 sec. pm. 3) For early-morning
risers, here are a few more targets for binoculars: a) Find the
red supergiant Antares at the heart of J-shaped Scorpio; scan
slowly to the right of Antares. Look for a compact, circular,
fuzzy patch of light known as the Antares Nebula. Binoculars
have a field of view of 5 to 7 degrees. Antares and the nebula
are less than 2 degrees apart so you can get both in the same
view through binoculars. Large, modern telescopes resolve it
into a globular cluster of 100,000 stars. There are about 200
such clusters around the outside of our disk-shaped Milky Way
galaxy. They dive down through it and out the other side over a
period of millions of years, then dive back again in the other
direction. b) Finally, if you have not seen Ptolemy's and the
Butterfly open clusters, find the two stars at the stinger of
Scorpio. Five degrees to their left is Ptolemy's cluster, close
enough to fit in the same view with the stinger stars. Just
above Ptolemy's Cluster (one o'clock) is the Butterfly Cluster.
Globular clusters contain old stars, open clusters young ones.
During Baja's summer, these clusters are visible in the evening
sky, but are usually too low to see north of the border. Click
