USA citizens… Time to register to vote all. I believe you may need
to do this every year. To get an absentee ballot and register states
have different requirements, for me with Nevada I have to have it in
by October 14. I also was lucky Nevada I could send it by email vs.
mailing it. And Nevada allows me to vote with an online download and
email it in when we vote.
Here is the general federal site that allows you to fill out the
form online and then mail it, or as I did email which I went to my
county to find the email address to mail it to.

========================================= I've received two calls
in the past two days from people pretending to be from Microsoft.
They explained to me that they have information that my computer has
been hacked. I must admit, I'm having a lot of fun with them.
Beware, these guys are pretty good. Most have day jobs providing
tech support at legitimate call centers. They earn extra money
operating these scams. The easiest way to tell you're being scammed,
the phone will ring and you will hear the phone ringing back the
calling party to let them know that there is a live person on the
phone. They have software that dials hundreds of phones but will
terminate the calls unless someone answers. Remember Microsoft will
not call you!!! The callers are after your money!!!
Speaking of Viruses, it's time to review what you have on your
computer. Microsoft offers a very good free anti-virus program
called Security Essentials in Windows 7 and Defender in Windows 8. I
use that program exclusively and I go places you should never
venture on the web. Of course, behavior on the web can get you in
trouble. No matter how good your anti-virus program is, if you have
a teenager using the computer, you stand a good chance of getting a
virus. The best plan with Mac's and PC's for teens is to create a
limited user account for them. They can't download any harmful
programs without the administrator password. Yep, some Moms have
surrendered and given it up – not good! There are paid anti-virus
programs out there such as Nod32 from Eset.com which are very good
and don't slow down the operation of your computer. Norton and
McAfee will slowdown your computer. I like free and have used
Microsoft's programs for the past 5 years – free with free updates.
Mac's are no longer immune from
Malware. The number of cases are on the rise and the financial
incentive grows. Teens are also very good at infecting Macs. Be
careful which software you download and make sure it's a trusted
site. Cnet is no longer a trusted site. Cnet subed out the download
portion of their web site to a company that loves to install
malware.
If your computer is five years old,
there is a good chance you could see a hard drive failure. In most
cases it will fail without warning. You need a back-up strategy.
Mozy and Carbonite are two very good solutions for backing up those
valuable photos and documents. Both work in the background with no
detriment to daily operation. The initial backup takes sometime, so
leave the computer on and connected to the web for a couple of
nights to get through that initial backup. After that, those
programs will only update changes that you have made. You can access
your files on line even if you are on another computer. I use
external hard drives as well but there is a huge piece of mind
having one copy in the cloud. A very famous author had just finished
a new novel. Someone stole his laptop and backup hard drive. Don't
let that happen to you!

Phone 'scammers' are still working the lines trying
to lure in people to send money to them. They pose as a 'friend or
relative'. Don't fall for this, be vigilant.

A big "Thank You!" from the Desert Hawks Rescue Group in El Rosario
- We would like to thank the BajaNomad community for their support
in helping our non-profit rescue group in El Rosario: the Desert
Hawks. We started serving our community and travelers in this area
in March 2013. So far we have responded to 136 emergencies and
helped out almost 400 individuals with rescue and transport. Out of
these emergencies, 96% have been car crash and/or rollovers along
Highway 1 and out of these 136 events, 23 involved US citizens
traveling along Highway 1 and, thanks in part to all of you, the
Halcones del Desierto Grupo de Rescate have always been there,
ready to help.
BajaNomads have been supporting our cause, sometimes sending us
donations via the Internet, others by sending materials with friends
and/or by stopping at BajaCactus and donating something in person,
every little helps out. Since last year we have received a little
over $1,000 dollars and we have put every penny to work directly
into helping others... Thank you!!!
Now, the Desert Hawks are preparing to create a Volunteer Fire and
Rescue Group. An extension of our group with much needed services in
these area, specially the vehicle extrication part. We are in the
middle of getting a fire engine donated. Also we just received some
items donated from Care Convoy, a non profit organization managed by
Todd Jaynes in Jerome, Idaho, who was aware of our efforts and sent
some help to start giving life to this new project.
If there are any fireman out there any help and/or advice will be
very much appreciated. In behalf of our rescue group and all our
volunteers: Thank you so much for being part of our efforts...
Together we can save lives! ☞ Antonio Muñoz, Desert Hawks Rescue
Group,
