Mayor’s Meeting: February 24 2016. During the Flag Day celebration,
Francis presented the following update to the town: In the
three months in office, we have achieved several milestones and
highlights including:
November
· Community party for the whole of Los Barriles
· La Cancha: painted and bathrooms fixed for the time being.
· Civil Protection Group: voluntary group formed for emergency
situations e.g. hurricanes.
December
· Santa Claus party for the community – loved by the children.
January
· Lord of the Wind alongside Rotary and groups.
· Tech Center back up and running.
February
· Los Barriles 300 – success with 1,500+ visitors. A huge clean-up
after the event was coordinated.
· Carnival Parade – success and we are looking at how to make it
bigger next year.
· El Coro – a party was held to try and raise money for the repair
of the school bus to take the 15 children to school every day. The
children either have to walk or find a ride into town.
Social Programs:
· All ranchers in the district visited to see how they live and what
they need. 1,000 bags of food were dispensed as part of the DIF
Program. This program will continue.
· All people over 65+ in the district were registered with the
Federal Government so that they can now receive $1000 pesos/month
(if they don’t have a government pension or social security).
· Agricultural Permits – there is a big campaign to get all
ranchers, fisherman and sellers of agricultural products to register
with the Delegacion This will enable the government to
help them with things such as fencing subsidies. If they are not
registered, they cannot be helped. There is no tax to pay on their
products.
· Water supply – a water container has been obtained for El
Coro to provide them with clean water.
· School visits – Francis is visiting one school every Monday to
talk to the students about the importance of education, and talk to
the staff about anything they need such as repairs. Already the
Delegacion has helped with anything from cleaning trees to fixing
fences in school yards.
· Beach Access – we want free access to the beaches for
everyone in the community. People who want to walk along them, to
see the beach, to see the sunsets – even if they don’t have a beach
home. That means there can be no rocks, no fences or constructions
on the beach 20 meters from the tide line. Yes we want to protect
the life on the beach. We will be getting speed signs for the
vehicles, and other official signs – federal numbers are required
for genuine turtle signs. Next week, we will be removing rocks from
the beach in line with the 20 meter rule. The authorities in La Paz
will send a notice to people to remove any other constructions from
the beach. They will have two months to do this and this will be
free. After two months, they will be penalized. This is the Mexican
law and we need to follow the Mexican law.
Watch out for more notices next week from the Mayor
about the exciting events planned for Semana Santa and The Queen of
the Sea initiative. There are lots of opportunities for the whole
community to take part, have fun and celebrate this important time
of the year for Los Barriles.

I have a rental home in La Ribera and would like to decorate a wall
with photographs of local flora, fauna, sunsets, sunrises, sports
activities, etc. Rather than use "stock" photos from the internet, I
would like to use photos taken by local amateur photographers. My
purpose in dong this is to let my guests see the incredible beauty
of The East Cape that they might miss if here for only a short time
or if they are limited in their ability to get out and experience it
all first hand. If you are willing to help me out with this project,
