Baja Night Sky #89 -- Week of March 6, 2016:
1) This is a good week to take out binoculars or telescope and look
at Jupiter and its four largest moons, Ganymede, Io, Europa, and
Callisto. Jupiter is at opposition on March 8, directly opposite the
sun from Earth, and the closest we approach the giant planet; It
will rise just as the sun sets. Four hundred six years ago, Galileo
pointed his first telescope -- a paper tube holding small hand
polished lenses -- at Jupiter. His notes describe four stars lined
up from east to west near the planet. But when he looked the
following night, the stars had changed their position, something
that prevailing dogma said never occurred in a perfect, unchanging
universe where everything in the heavens revolved around Earth. This
time he called them planets. Today they are referred to as the
Galilean moons of Jupiter, the four largest of Jupiter's 63 known
moons. If you look for them through binoculars on Monday evening
when Jupiter is high in the eastern sky, you will find the largest,
Ganymede, far below Jupiter. Io and Europa are close together just
above Jupiter, and Callisto far above the planet. Tom at

Road Report: Mex 5 to Mexicalli:
About 7 weeks ago my wife and I decided to go North through
Mexicalli. The route begins at Laguna Chapalla, about 30 miles North
on Mex-1 of the road to Bay of LA. The road surface for the first 30
miles is rough gravel. We had no problem but our speed was 15 mph.
Once we were through the gravel portion of Highway 5 we hit a
beautiful new road which lasted about 30 miles or so. (By the way,
reports of the 30 miles of construction being completed by the first
of the year are greatly exaggerated in my opinion. The reroute
involves horrendous terrain and I don't think there is the manpower
or equipment to begin to finish the job that fast). Back to our
trip...From the recent new road to San Felipe better bring out your
best driving skills between Puertecitos and San Felipe. There are
dips and then there are dips. Some of the dips are so steep that if
you are traveling more than 30 mph your vehicle will go air borne
and coming down from going air borne is not fun. We stopped in San
Felipe for the night and found a nice place for about 650 pesos.
Make sure you have plenty of fuel for the trip from San Felipe to
Mexicalli because there are no services for about 200 k's. We only
got lost in Mexicalli once and asked directions and quickly got back
on track. The wait at the border was about 1 hour. Depending on
where you are going, I suggest taking route 2, East from 5 before
reaching Mexicalli and take this road to the crossing at Yuma.
Our trip back had some differences. First we got good directions to
get through Mexicalli. We took road 111 off of I- 8 to Mexicalli.
Right after crossing the border veer right which means you should
use the right hand entrance. There is a San Felipe sign. Then keep
veering right especially as you pass COSTCO. We expected to spend
the night in San Felipe again but there were thousands of people
there because of a SCORE off road vehicle event. The hotel we
planned to stay in was $120 a night during the event and we would
have had to stay 2 nights. We traveled on even though it was rather
late. We found a spartan room at Puertecitos for $45. It was right
on the water and quite a nice setting. No electricity in the morning
so no coffee and no hot water but it beat sleeping on the ground. We
stopped at Gonzaga Bay for breakfast at a restaurant/motel. We had
about the best huevos rancheros we have ever had. The hotel had
rooms for 1,050 pesos. We then booked it for Santa Rosalia and
arrived about an hour before dark. One more thing about the rough 30
miles....there was all types of vehicles on it including two RV's
pulling cars. This I would not recommend as the drivers of those
RV's looked stressed and the cars they were towing were covered with
dust. Give a call if you have questions...Paul Rich 142-8054.
