INTERNET/CELL PHONES/ LAPTOPS IN BAJA

       A. I use AT&T with my laptop and it works great! Expensive, but it works very good. I have a friend that tried verizon in June when we were down and it didn't work.
J.Ted Plombon

       B. The AT&T cell wireless internet card will work in Mexico. A caller to one of the tech shows I listen to used the AT&T card to download a movie for his young son in Cabo. When the monthly bill arrived, the cost of the download was over $70,000. Yes, that's correct. Before you use any cell wireless cards or connections (IPhones included) make sure you have signed up for the international data rate. That is an extra charge that you might compare to the Telcel charge. The ATT service is "Edge" not 3G. Speed is double dial-up speed, hardly broadband. The Verizon Cards use CDMA technology which may not service the Los Barriles area. Mexico (Telcel and Telefonica Moviestar) uses GSM technology while Sprint (new to our area) uses CDMA

CALIFORNIA CAR REGISTRATION

A.. (1) CA cars left in Baja for an extended time can be registered in CA as inoperable
This will work to get away from CA insurance, but your vehicle will not be legal in Baja.
Your vehicle must have current registration and license plate sticker to be legal and for this you
will need insurance.

       B. If you register non-op you will no longer receive a sticker the next year. You will have to go through the hoops again with the "Statement of Facts" document. Tis best to just pay minimal US insurance and drive legally in Mex. I have been this route. They are checking regularly.

       C. But, how can you get your sticker?????Please post in the BPE Thank you, Mengia

       D. If your California car registration status is changed to inoperable, then you can not get current tags, then you can not get insurance, then you are basically screwed.

       E. For CA vehicle registration I have successfully used the Affidavit of Non-use (Reg 5090). Since the vehicle is located in Mexico (further than the border states) and is NOT used on any streets in the USA, I fill out the pdf form 5090, submit the form then drop the insurance. Before you renew the plates, you need to re-insure the vehicle for 30 days, then drop the insurance after completing the Reg 5090 for the new year. Make sure you complete and fax the form before you drop the insurance. The advantage of Non-use over Non-op is that you can get the current sticker for the plates. As always, some local CA DMV's do not know all the rules. I have always had success calling the Sacramento Hq.
(We use 21st Century Car Insurance. They allow us to suspend our policy (dormant status when in Mexico) thus allowing us to make a simple phone call to reinstate the insurance if we are going back into the US. Ask if your insurance carrier will do this. Cheryl)

       F. (1) cars left in Baja for an extended time can be registered in CA as inoperable. This gets around the smog check and the insurance
You also won’t get a reg tag for the year and if you drive the car you can be ticketed
