I am planning another trip across our beautiful Sierra de Las
Lagunas mountains. We will take 4 days to summit, spend a day
relaxing in the dry lake bed, and then exit down the west face
coming out near Todos Santos. We usually carry our own gear (40-50lb
packs) but have made the trip with a mule before, too. You should be
prepared for 6+ hours of strenuous hiking, climbing, and
boulder-hopping each day except the day we spend at the lake. We
will share the costs (guide, transportation, etc.) and share gear
wherever possible to reduce weight. We will go sometime between
mid-October and mid-November depending on the availability of the
guide. If you are interested in joining us contact me at: pamelagray@mac.com

In April I broke my foot and had to have it operated on at the
Amerimed Hospital in Cabo. I had a very good experience even though
I had to stay there for
five days due to an infection that developed. I am on Medicare and
as you know, it does not cover your medical expenses outside of the
United States. We had to pay all of my bills via my Visa card
because of the cost of the service that I had. Months later, after
more visits and treatments, we were ready to submit our expenses to
our secondary health insurance. We asked Char at the LB clinic to
help and she did an outstanding job. It was professionally done with
a main letter on Amerimed stationery including references regarding
treatment and cost. included throughout the letter. I sent one set
of papers with letter to Medicare in Baltimore and one set to my
secondary health insurance. I have already received several checks
from my secondary health insurance that will probably cover at least
90% to 95 % of my expenses. They sent the checks right away without
receiving word from Medicare stating that I would not be covered
because the care was done outside of the States. I am convinced that
it was the letter with all of the test results and treatment reports
that made them send the reimbursement immediately. If you do need
service via Amerimed and you are on Medicare or you need to be
reimbursed by your insurance in the States, do have Char take care
of all of your paper work with accompanying letter. All that is
asked is for you to make a donation to the East Cape Urgent Care
program. We are so fortunate to have this kind of service in LB.
Thanks so much Char.

In 2007, Sea Watch with their attorney Maria Ugarte and armed with
1000s of emails from Sea Watch supporters, sponsored a new federal
regulation to ban compressors (hookah gear) for any fish extraction
in all Mexican waters. It was approved in late 2007. For the last 12
years hookah divers using nets during the day and spearguns at night
have killed over 90% of the reef fish. These two illegal techniques
account for 60 to 70 percent of the fish in the markets during the
spring and they are the reasons the reefs in BCS and in the Sea of
Cortes are empty. Sea Watch then fought for the next 2 years to get
the approved ban passed into law. That just happened!
So, on July 1st, 2009 – a new vigilance patrol program called
“Observatorio Ciudadano” was begun in La Paz by Plataforma Bahia de
La Paz and is off to a successful start – on the first 3 nocturnal
weekly vigilance trips, contacts were made with approximately 20
boats fishing illegally and pictures. The vigilance programs goals
are threefold. First, is to patrol night and day to make contact
with fishermen, disseminate information and discuss problems.
Second, to stop illegal acts like hookah divers using nets during
the day and spear guns at night to clean the reefs of fish. And
third, to build a net of fishermen, citizens, dive businesses and
the cruising community that will work together to report illicit
acts. Plataforma attorneys will then file denuncias (lawsuits) and
encourage (pressure in the press) officials to prosecute the
violations.

RIDES FOR PEOPLE AND STUFF
a. Is anyone coming to Los Barriles in the
near future?? I need a small envelope brought down. If so please
email me your address so I can have it shipped to you.
Thanks Kelly Martin email:
kwmx3@yahoo.com
b. Is anyone in the states planning to come
down to L/B soon? The ants are horrendous and there is no poison
available here that is suitable around pets. There is some that
comes in a small [1 oz?] bottle with one side flat so it can be laid
down when opened. The ants then carry the stuff back to the nest and
Voila! I believe it is available in 6-packs. I would of course
reimburse and be forever grateful.
