Hurricane Jimena - 9/3/2009
Mid-Baja has suffered major damage. We are getting “real time”
reports from different sources including people on the ground in the
damage areas as well as the Mexican Red Cross. It is not good. The
reports that we have indicate:
Matancitas (Lopez Mateos) Almost 90% of the structures are down or
severely damaged. All water, power, telephone, etc. out
Ciudad Constitucion: Most roofs are gone; sever damage to 70% of the
buildings. Power, water, telephones are out
Loreto: All power / telephone are down, lines are down, trees and
buildings blocking the streets, airport is closed at this time.
Mulege: All power, telephone, water, etc. is out. The water crested
three feet above the bridge. Water was two feet deep in the fire
station which would mean that almost of the entire town was flooded.
There has been reports of loss of life.
Punta Chivato: One person indicates that the wind was over 100 mph
before the indicator broke. Damage to almost everything. We should
hear about the condition of the strip sometime today
Santa Rosalia: Wall of water came down the canyon and through the
town, washed cars, etc. into the ocean.
The Red Cross has been in contact with us today, they are still in
the process of determining their needs however, they indicate that
they will need our help.
We will be putting out another alert for donations as well as where
they are needed. I have taken the position that we will not be
bringing things down unless there is a structured means of
distributing them. With Hurricane John, I have to estimate that
about half of the donations ended up with people that really did not
need them.

Here's a forwarded report of damage around Bahia Conception
Thursday, September 03, 2009
I wrote this last night and am sending it via Jerry’s Problem’s
satellite.
I will most likely be off line until I get the satellite re-aligned.
Greetings from overcast El Burro Cove
As you probably already know Jimena came over the top of El Burro
yesterday. Recorded winds here were 100 knots which would make it a
category 2 hurricane. ALL palapas had some damage. Mine was minimal
with the loss of all the sand on my porch and a portion of my roof
at the crown lost.
I now have a tarp over that section.
Skip, my fellow summer stay-er-oner on the beach had some roof
damage but otherwise his palapa faired better than most. Just a
little water damage where the roof leaked. He is fine.
I got blown out of my palapa and spent the afternoon and night in
the trailer, which leaked like a sieve, except over the couch and
bed.
Five gallon buckets were emptied about every hour.
It would be impossible to list all the damages to the palapas on the
beach. Most if not all had roof damage. La Vita is on the beach.
This time in front of Bobby and Ted’s place. The mizzen is gone and
serious damage to the starboard ama.
The Prez’s palapa has no sand under the kitchen section. I don’t
have a clue as to what is holding it up. In front of the palapas on
el Burro there is two feet less sand than 2 days ago. To step down
from my porch is a three foot drop.
My satellite is down as well as my weather station. Don’t know when
they will be up an running again. My wifi keyboard was full of water
this morning. It is not happy about that.
El Coyote, south, and los Cocos palapas have been flattened.
On the way to town this morning EVERY house I saw had roof damage.
Mulegé took a major hit. The water in the river came to 3 feet below
the bottom of the bridge. The water line on Poncho’s
tienda was 3 feet above the sideaYKalk. All overhead signs were
either down or damaged as well as many power poles and telephone
lines. The Mulegé dam broke. Most of the road signs have been
damaged….blown over. I did not go into town proper because I could
see the mud in the streets from the bridge. I did stop and look down
at Arlene’s trailer. It was still there; however I don’t know what
or if
there was any damage. Ana’s restaurant took a major hit. Not just
the roof but inside damage as well. Bertha’s, now being run by
Indian Al and Celia, had only slight damage. Bertha had Oscar put on
a new tin roof last week and he missed nailing down several panels.
Al was up on the roof during the hurricane nailing down the panels
before they blew o ff. Scotie’s Restaurant had 3 feet of water.
The main long bridge this side of Santa Rosalia is down as well as
several of the new bridges between Mulegé and Santa Rosalia.
To the best of my knowledge there has been no loss of life.
Several days prior to the storm the locals in the low areas were
moving what they could to higher ground.
I have taken a lot of pictures but have no way of showing them right
now.
The road to Loreto just opened this afternoon (Thursday) for
emergency
traffic only. Several convoys of power company the military came
through. I know from past experience that the Mexican government
will be running round-the-clock helping folks put there lives back
together here. There will be food kitchens run by the Military and
several 24 hour a day purified water stations running. Military
helicopters will be in the back country making sure the folks at the
ranches are cared for.
Just prior to hurricane Jimena I was going to send out a little note
to all saying the only thing exciting this summer was a brand new
yellow line going down the middle Mex I and Bertha’s new tin roof.
Unfortunately I have had to report on the worst storm Mulegé has
ever had.
I know each one of you would like to know exactly what damage your
home here has. I will try to update you when I can.
Everything here in my palapa is damp and covered with a fine
covering of salt. I’m starting the clean-up tomorrow. First inside
then out.
Late reports Friday morning via ham radio have:
Punta Chivato: major water damage to homes along shell beach
San Carlos: Several boat sank within the San Carlos harbor. River
flowing through dry storage.
Santa Rosalia: all boats and persons safe.
Puerto Escondito: All boats and persons safe.
No reports of any damage to any cruisers on the Baja side during the
storm.
Major damage to the old Marina at Santa Rosalia, however no looses
to boats or persons. No problems at Singular marina.
As of 8am Friday. No power: Loreto, Mulegé, San Carlos, Santa
Rosalia. Some cell towers working though on emergency power.
Hope to be back on line soon.
