Adventure on the Guaymas - Santa Rosalia Ferry crossing How it all started: We came from Santa Fe via Tucson and crossed the border at Nogales. The federales instructed us to Km 22 to get a permit for our new car and we were prepared with all documents for the car and ourselves. This is absolutely required if you are to take the ferry from Topolobompo to La Paz which we have done many times in our old Ford truck which had the sticker and permit as many years as I can remember. Well, we traded in that truck, sticker, permit and all last August. After two hours of discussion, copying of our FM2/Inmigrado documents, and more running from window to window at Km 22 we were denied a permit for our vehicle!! Why? According to customs, the federales, and/or immigration, we have the status of Inmigrado (we have lived in La Paz for 20 years) and we were supposed to be driving a car with a Mexican license plate! Visitors with limited Visas and FM 3 people were all passing us and getting permits for their cars. If I were to get a visitor visa I would be illegal and I told them so in Spanish. There was a public relations officer ( at least that is what I think he was and he spoke good English and tried to be very helpful ) who had us fill out forms and complaints. We are not the first people to have this dilemma. Sooo! On to plan B!

Sonora is a "hassel free car zone" according to a big green map at KM 22. After asking 4 different officials if we could take the Guaymas ferry to Santa Rosalia without a permit for our vehicle we were told that this was possible. We drove on from Nogales spending the night at Magdalena ( El Toro Hotel highly recommended ) which is on the old #15. Then on to Hermosillo where we spent the night at Motel Bougambilla ( also recommended) on Eusibio Kino Blvd. We like to park where you can see the car from your room. We took our time because we called ahead to the Guamas Ferry for the schedule and it was departing 3 days away.
Next stop Guaymas where we enjoyed 2 days at the historic Playa del Cortez Hotel ( the ferry schedule changed from 8 PM to 6 AM the next morning. It is a small ferry and only private vehicles or small vans are allowed. No 18 -22 wheelers. With a vehicle and 3 people the third person is free. Our cost was $3700 MM ( pesos). The crossing was 9 hours and reclining seats are avalable and Mexican fast food or bring your own. The ferry does not depart in bad weather and we thought the trip very smooth. For further info: www.ferrysantarosalia.com This is NOT owned by Baja Ferries. Talk to Diego if you call - he speaks perfect English and is very helpful. Pets allowed and OK to keep in your car. madero2115_05@yahoo.com

a. For over 20 years we have prepared US Tax Returns for Americans living in Mexico. We know US tax law and how to coordinate it with the Mexican tax law. Please go to our websites if you wish to know more: www.taxmeless.com  and www.usexpatattorneycpa.com  or download our tax preparation questionnaire.

Remember if you own property in a fideicomiso; have a Mexican bank or financial account or own part or all of a Mexican corporation there are special forms which must be filed on certain due dates. If those forms are not file or not filed in a timely manner you will incur penalties of $10,000 or more for not file or late filing. In some situations criminal penalties may also be imposed. The previous lenient atmosphere at the IRS with respect to expatriates living and working abroad is now gone. Both Congress and the IRS are convinced billions of dollars of unpaid US taxes have been undisclosed and they are now conducting a very serious campaign to rectify the problem.
