A.L.M.A. Humanitaria, A.C. ( Animal Lover's of Mexico) will meet
this coming Tuesday.
When : Tuesday, July 14, 2009
Where : Front patio at The Rancho Buena Vista
Time : 9:30 am
All animal lovers are welcome to attend. Find out how you can make a
difference in the lives of local domestic animals. This very
proactive group helps to provide low cost spay/neuter, vaccines and
other veterinary services to families who qualify for our
assistance. Since January of this year over 200 dogs/cats have been
spayed or neutered in the Los Barriles area.
For more information please log onto www.almacares.com or call
Sheila Pierson at 141-0267 or Sheila Marshall at 044-624-137-7683.
Together we DO make a difference! Volunteer to help keep our streets
and beaches free of unwanted dogs. We have a variety of ways that
you can help. From working hands on with the dogs/puppies, providing
foster care, picking up animals and taking them to the clinic,
working at an ALMA event, going into out lying areas to provide
vaccines or planning future events. We are on the move! Join us!

After much discussion we took the recommendation of Dennis Riley and
installed a Sayse
security system in our home. Yesterday during a power outage we
incorrectly alarmed
our new system and drove away. Within 10 minutes the police were at
our door. Although we
erred on our part we now knew the system worked perfectly, the
police response was outstanding
and we were amazed. We still have details to work out and we hope to
have no more false alarms
but now feel confident the security company functions as promised
and the police response
proved to be impressive. Thank you Sayse, Los Barriles Policia
Ministerial and Policia Municipal.

I cannot tell you how thankful I am to Sebastian for fixing my i
phone....
A few days ago I was attempting for the first time to download i
tunes and my phone locked up, I had no idea why or what to do. Then
Sebastian walked into my office, I told him what had happened and he
said he would see what he could do. He took my phone back to his
store which is located on hwy 1 next to the Baja Pack place. The
next day my phone was fixed, he spent all day researching the
problem and found out this was happening to anyone trying to
download i tunes, apparently there is a new upgrade that
automatically downloads, this is what messed up my phone. If this
has happened to you, Sebastian is your guy, his e mail address is
inso@mg2.com.mx and his cell is 612 159 1324 if you're calling from
a land line dial 045 before the number...

Attached are a couple of pics of my Trailer that contained some
valuables on El Camino D Jonathan. Just North of Town. It was wedged
in between car and wall, locked and chained under my Palapa.
Fortunately I removed a wheel both from the car and the trailer and
rested them on cement blocks.
They of course also busted into our trailer (removed the plywood
over the windows) we live in and helped them selves to a few
sellable items. This happened either Tuesday night July 7th or
sometime on Wednesday July 8th. Gardener discovered on Thursday the
9th.
I believe it is the same group that robbed us over Thanksgiving 2008
as well.
Not sure there is anything you can do to protect what you may value
in the area.
What they got is really not that valuable. However what they
destroyed to get what they wanted had the value.
George
( I did not include the photos......they show the paneling ripped
off the side of the trailer. George, thank you for the report. I
think it is important to post break-ins on the BPE. Cheryl)

I wanted to let all of Jo Black's Baja friends know that she died on
July 6, at home in Port Townsend, Wa. of lung cancer. We will always
be grateful that Mom made it to Baja this past winter. One day last
winter Mom was sitting on the beach watching us windsurf on a really
windy day. I was out on the water, and came in to get her off the
beach in the strong wind. She said, "No, Sitting in the wind is so
restorative." We will really miss her. Ellen, MacRae, and Fiona

SECURITY DISCUSSION
a. The recent posting from Jeff regarding security, does pose some
questions. I recently was one of the victims of the break-ins on the
Ridge. Nothing taken. I also was a victim of the ATV thefts a few
years ago. I got mine back by posting a reward which was graciously
accepted. (Small bills, no checks)
Some things for consideration's:
1.It has often been stated that, police don't prevent crime, their
duty is to catch criminals. Which they did with my ATV. It is
extremely unlikely that a policeman would be present at the exact
time of the break-in. So we shouldn't expect any amount of police to
catch a criminal red-handed.
2. However, it has been proven with the "surge" in Iraq, that with
more bodies on the ground crime (terrorism) diminishes. Again the
ATV thefts seem to have diminished
3. But if the crime abates, what do these extra policemen do? This
is not a retoriqual question. I believe that the criminals are not
from Los Barriles. Maybe these extra police could spend time with
locals to find out who is not from here and why are they here. I
know this has been a problem on construction sites with laborers
from the main land.
4. Without viable homeowners insurance in Mexico, we need to do what
we can to provide our own coverage. Maybe this means better locks,
security devices, alarms, safes timers for lights and window/door
grates. I told Dennis of PayDennis that Americans don't like bars on
the windows as it seems like jail. He laughed and said good, then
they'll break into your place before mine.
5. I don't believe gringos are being singled out. My general
contractor (Mexican) had $10,000 US$ stolen from him last Christmas.
6. The conspicuous demonstration of wealth doesn't work anywhere.
This is especially true now that unemployment is rising. Baja has
long been a full employment economy; this is no longer true.
On a more philosophical note, In the US most of our security and
local services, i.e., police, firemen, sanitation, etc, are paid by
taxes. This comes in the form of local sales tax, property tax and
state income tax. For all intensive purposes these taxes don't exist
(at least in any meaningful amount) in Mexico and certainly not in
Baja. Therefore, I am always amazed at how quickly the gringo's
demand these services without understanding that there are no funds
to pay for them. I personally am for supporting the "Crime
Committee" with funds. It is kind of like a self tax. Where else can
we actually tax ourselves and know where the funds go, and have a
voice in the process. Kind of like the way America used to be and we
wish it still was.
