DOLLARS TO PESOS TALK
a. Hola Cheryl...interesting info about the
banks not changing US dollars to pesos without an
account...wondering if the money exchange store next to El Viejo
still does or if using the ATMs is the only way...anybody know for
sure?
b. The American Express Office in San Jose
del Cabo has been closed for some time. Best place to exchange money
is MONEX, just past Costco heading toward San Lucas. Hours are 9 to
2, M-F. They also offer check cashing and Mexican brokerage services
(money market funds, mutuals, Mexican stock market etc.). Good
service and exchange rate. You must register with them in order to
use their check cashing service. Overall, very convenient with
courteous staff. Sabrina Lear

c. The best way in which to get money at
the best rate is the ATM
American Express closed their office in San Jose del Cabo
d. I only visit Los Barriles for a couple
of months every summer, but have found the best system for me to
exchange dollars to pesos is my checking account with USAA. I put
dollars into that account, then withdraw pesos with my USAA debit
Mastercard at any ATM in the world with no service fee from USAA.
The Bancomer and Banamex ATMs in Los Barriles both accept my debit
card, as do Chapitos and other merchants who accept credit/debit
cards. Mastercard charges me 1% currency conversion, but that’s
better than the 3- 5% the banks and Cambios charge. The thing I love
the most about this system is that I don’t have to carry large
amounts of cash in dollars. One possible downside is limits to the
amount of money you can withdraw from an ATM in a single transaction
– but that has not been a problem for me.

Please remember:
A visit to our only High School in Santiago this past Spring by
members of the East Cape Guild
Scholarship Fund and their guests was truly an eye opening
experience. The visitors learned so
much about the school and its programs. The program that stood out
to many of us was the
"Tourism" programs which train the interested students for jobs in
the tourist industries such
as chefs, waiters, bartenders, maids and travel guides. These
programs are very popular and
do receive some hands on training from a hotel in Cabo. However the
program requires the
students to actually make meals, serve meals, make drinks, give
tours, etc. at the school.
To do this they need supplies. The chefs for instance must buy their
own ingredients for
meal preparations; the tour guides make brochures and posters.
The lovely principle Raquel Rivas and her staff shared their ideas
of items the school needs.
Following is a list of items for the "tourism programs" that we hope
you can donate. If you can
help with an item please let me know.
David and Carlene at the Los Barriles information Center in the
center of town have offered to be a
drop off point.
Used items are great! Hit those garage sales or clean out your
clutter!
Just about anything for a kitchen is needed. Items can be used in
the tourism training kitchen or in
the very humble Breakfast and Lunch "cafeteria" ;which by the way is
the only one in Baja.
However, think shack, not even resembling a US cafeteria.
Pots and Pans.. (we throw out ones in their condition)
Colored Paper
Silverware and utensils
Printing Paper
Brochure Quality Paper
Serving dishes
Food Processors
Knives
Blender
Spanish language cookbooks
Kitchen towels
Napkins
Items related to bar service, including basic liquors and mixers.
English Dictionaries with at least 500 pages and full size are still
needed for the English Classes.
If you can tuck in any of these items into your suitcase or car on
the trip down the students
and staff will be delighted. If everyone in our large East Cape
community tucked in even one used
or new item, the list would be complete and the education of our
East Cape students would be less
challenging for them.
