SATELLITE TALK

       a. Signals come and go down here as Dish Network replaces satellites.
110W was replaced a year and a half ago and we no longer get anything from it.
129W was replaced early this year and we can now get it with a 1.2 meter dish. It carries HD channels only.
72.7W is scheduled to be replaced by the end of this year. We can not get it now, but we will see after the swap. It has most of the same channels as 110 and 119, but requires a reciever that can recieve MPEG4 signals. (like a HD, but it is not HD)
119W, our main satellite for Dish Network is due to be replaced in the next year and a half. Lets hope we stay in the footprint of the new bird. It is the only place we can get the east/ west US network channels other than starchoice.

       b. You can get both 119 & 110 if you have 2 dishes, one pointing to each of the satellites.

       c. Re: Dish Network 110° Satellite.
The 110° satellite does not have much signal in our area. I have heard from some individuals in Mazatlan and Acapulco who are picking it up with an 8' to 12' dish but they are closer to the edge of the 110° signal than we are.
The other Dish Network satellite that does have signal in our area is the 129°. It carries a number of high definition channels but, unfortunately, does not carry the Encore Movie Channels, the Military Channel or the Hallmark Channel.
With Best Regards,
Alan

Dollars to Pesos Talk

a. another way to get pesos is through a Remittance transfer account. i have one set up with my Wells Fargo account. Cnce you get it set up, your first transaction needs to be at the teller window, from then on you can do it online. simply log into your account and transfer money to the Mexican bank you have designated. in our area it has to be Bancomer. Anyway, once you transfer the money it automatically converts to pesos at the transfer dates exchange rate. You then go to Bancomer and tell them you have a remittance to pick up. An account at Bancomer is not required. This is how our Mexican brothers in "el norte" send money home. But the account has to be set up in the US first.
Other US banks have agreements with Banamex, and HSBC. So check with your bank.

b. I have lived in Mexico for nearly five years and during that time I have used a debit card probably hundreds of times at an ATM and had only one significant problem when the ATM charged me but failed to dispense the cash. My bank in the US reversed out the withdrawal immediately when I telephoned them a few minutes later. It is important, however to know both the exchange rate and the conversion charge (if any) that you pay. Not all banks use the same exchange rate (which changes daily). So, just because you pay a low conversion charge does not mean that you necessarily pay less that someone who pays a 3 % conversion fee. And the exchange rate using an ATM card is virtually always considerably less than what you get when exchanging dollars for Pesos with a teller at the bank. So, whatever you choose, do your homework first. It pays.

c. I use my ATM card sparingly in Los Barriles, but my bank in the United States gives me back the 3-5% that is charged on all the card activity whether at the ATM, Chapitos or any other establishment in Mexico. So, I am a happy camper. I do however know that if I want to change my US money into pesos, I must first deposit the US currency into my Bancomer account and withdraw the pesos from my account.

The Ferry Boat

People are once again emailing regarding the trip on Baja Ferries, and although, I don't mind passing on the information, I will put it into the Baja Pony, and then don't have to answer lots of emails with the same info. The trip on the Baja Ferry is great if you don't want to drive the whole of Baja, and/or you live in Arizona or points north and east of Nogales.

There are certain documents you need to travel inside mainland Mexico. Copies of documents you need for the ferry crossing, and as things change I suggest you check out www.bajaferries.com, and/or call the main Baja Ferry office in La Paz. You need several copies of registration, licenses, US Auto Insurance, Mexican Insurance; the vehicle must be registered to the person who is traveling with the vehicle, (you cannot drive someones vehicle without them present, you will not get on the ferry), passport, health insurance for pets. Since I travel yearly on my working FM3, I no longer need a new vehicle permit yearly, I work in Baja, and have papers and so my auto permit is tied to the renewal of my working FM3, but I still need some of the documentation I mentioned above. Please call the office in La Paz, as it will save you having to ask questions and you can get the correct info straight from Baja Ferries office, the girls speak English and are very knowledgeable and courteous. Baja Ferries office is located in La Paz on the corner of Ignacio Allende and Marcelo Rubio, you cannot miss it, lots parking and direct phone number from the states is: 011-52-612-125-7443 or 011-52-612-123-1414.
