Amigos: You won't want to miss the first Festival of the Season to
be held on Sunday, October 25 from 9-4 in the historic little
village of El Rosario. You've all seen the sign on Hwy #1 north of
El Triunfo at Km 167 pointing to El Rosario and the Santuario de
Cactus. The scenic 10 minute drive through the tree-covered hills
will put you in the historic "playground" of Manuel de Osio, one of
Baja California Sur's early entrepreneurs. If you've got the current
copy of East Capers you can read about Sr. de Osio and his escapades
on pages 27 and 28. The El Rosario Festival will showcase some of
our most talented regional artists, provide tours to the ruins of
the de Osio Hacienda, the Santuario de Cactus and the ancient tomb
at the nearby graveyard. You'll enjoy regional foods, entertainment
and exhibits of the environment in the protected La Laguna
Biosphere. The El Rosario Festival is co-sponsored by the Asociacion
de Artes and the El Rosario Community Committee. Proceeds go to
support the El Rosario Community Center. Admission Gratis! JoAnn

Citlali and Doug are looking for house sitting/ low rent
opportunities in Los Barriles. The wife says we can't "camp out" in
my van as we have a baby and are starting a business.. go figure? We
are responsible, experienced, and bilingual so we can help out in
many ways. Our plan is to stay through June. Let us know what you
are thinking.

Anybody notice a difference
in your phone bill?
Telmex has changed their
service for phone and internet to a “package”. We have been
automatically converted to “Paquete acerques”. That gives us
the monthly rental fee for the phone line, 200 local calls (
instead of 100), unlimited national long distance in Mexico,
up to 2Mb speed internet, caller ID, call waiting,
conference calling, call transfer, voice mail boxes with PIN
access, $2.30 peso per minute to United States and Canada,
and free wireless modem. This is for a package fee of $573
pesos per month including IVA.
This is great, but I don’t
want 100 extra calls, unlimited national calling, any of the
call ID, waiting, transferring, conferencing, calls to the
USA, etc.. and I was paying $458 including IVA before.
I went to Telmex and they
also offer the “Paquete conectes en infinitum”, the same as
Paquete acerques package except with only 100 local calls,
and up to 1Mb internet, and national calls are limited to
100 minutes. All the other call stuff is included and it is
$372 pesos per month including IVA.
The lower package is good
for me, but some others (that use the phone more)might find
that their bill may be lower if they keep the higher
package.
For those that don’t need
the extra calls and the higher speed internet service, or
that are not here year round, you need to contact Telmex to
get your service changed to the lower package. I stopped in
the Telmex office in San Jose del Cabo, and they changed it
for me. They wanted me to pay the higher rate for October’s
bill, but I convinced them that since I didn’t ask for it, I
shouldn’t have to pay for it. I think you need to do that
before you pay you bill, they won‘t be giving you credit
later. |
DOLLARS TO PESOS
a. On behalf of our newly
opened Bancomer Bank here in Los Barriles, and my branch manager
Jessica, I would like to introduce myself to you. My name is Noelia
and I am the representative for the "Preferred Customers Unit",
which has been specially designed to meet the needs of 'Extranjeros'
- aka visitors, guests, second homeowners, and foreign investment
businesses here in our community. I am fully bilingual and very much
look forward to assisting you when you find your way back to our
beautiful part of Baja. About cashing Traveler's Checks. YES, we do
it! That's our preferred method of assisting you in exchanging your
dollars, US or Canadian, into pesos. Just bring your traveler's
checks and a picture form of identification. If you have only
dollars, I would like to encourage you to consider opening a simple
Bancomer Savings Account, which requires no more than 20 minutes to
open - please bring your passport and any utility bill. This savings
account then allows you to deposit dollars at the teller window and
then walk to our enclosed, air conditioned ATM, and immediately
withdraw it. You can deposit as much as you'd like and withdraw up
to $5000 pesos per day. Our online banking system is as easy to use
as any US based bank and I am happy to assist you with getting
started in managing your account online. As an additional benefit,
you can also easily pay your utilities automatically from this
account or make payments to others, including for example vendors
with whom you may be working or doing business, even perhaps if you
are building a home or doing a remodel. Our savings account requires
only $1000 pesos (less than $100) to be without fees. Next time you
are in Los Barriles, please do drop in and visit me. I sit directly
to the left of the door. Of course, our ATM machine is available 24
hours a day for your use to withdraw funds from your US or Canadian
banks. I look forward to extending to you a grande 'Bienvenidos' to
Bancomer! Su amiga, Noelia, BBVA Bancomer Los Barriles.
b. Hi Stan: I used to
live in la Ribera and now live in Merida, Yucatan, a city of 1.7
million people. I was told by the manager of my Bancomer Branch that
it is the policy of Bancomer all over Mexico. Also, an American
cannot have a dollar account here unless they have a business that
orders inventory in dollars. I kept my dollar account from San Jose
Del Cabo.
When I asked "why", I was told that the dollar was too volatile and
the bank did not want to take the risk of losing money. there are
institutions that convert money such as Monex and Intercam.
c. Can anyone tell us if the cambiars are
still allowed to exchange dollars and traveler's checks to pesos?
Please post response to the BPE. thank you....

BORDER TALK
a. Hi.. have been told that used clothes
are being turned back at border (Tijuana, Tecate specifically) and
that they have to be transported back to USA. Hope it's fiction but
would like a si o no as I'm about to start out with bagsfull already
packed in the RV. Appreciate your marvelous function and will look
for answer. Thanks dsatt@q.com
b. CAN PEOPLE CROSSING THE BORDER BY
VEHICLE GOING NORTH AND SOUTH AND FROM DIFFERENT CROSSINGS POST
THEIR EXPERIENCES WITH THE NEW CUSTOMS PEOPLE ? ESPECIALLY CLOTHING
AND OTHER GOODS BEING BROUGHT IN TO BE DONATED IN THE AREAS THAT
HAVE BEEN HIT BY THE STORMS.
MY MAIN CONCERN IS BRINGING USED CLOTHING WITHOUT RECEIPTS AS THEY
ARE FROM FRIENDS AND FAMILY. I'M SURE THERE ARE MANY OTHER THINGS
PEOPLE BRING DOWN TO DONATE AS WELL.
PLEASE POST ON THE BPE.
THANK YOU,
JAMES H

I need help for an unusual situation. My husband has been feeding
and watering a very sweet older dog at the dump. She has been living
under a discarded couch. Recently this dog was attacked by something
and almost killed. We took this dog to Dr. Felipe and had her
stitched up and put back together. We have tried to integrate her
with our dogs but they are very jealous and have attacked her. So
she went back to the dump and lived there for a while until she was
recently badly attacked. She is staying at my house right now and
being treated for her wounds but once she is healed will have to
return to the dump. I need someone who is looking for a timeshare
(while you are here) dog. Someone who while in baja would like the
companionship of a dog and the protection of a dog who will bark if
someone is coming in your space without the worry of having to
travel with the dog. I just don't feel good about taking this dog
back to the dump and having her attacked again if I can prevent it.
She is good around people and has been fine around other dogs. She
was at my house for about 2 weeks before we took her back to the
dump after she was originally left there so we really got to know
her disposition. She is one heck of a good watch dog. Barks like
crazy but would lick you to death (nobody needs to know that). She
would be perfect for someone who comes to baja for the winter and is
a dog lover and would like to enjoy the benefits of having a dog
without the worry of what to do with the dog when they leave Mexico.
When you are ready to leave baja I will find the dog another place
to live or take her back until I can find a place for her. This dog
is a lab rottweiler mix. She is about 7 years old, is spayed and has
her shots. She is very mellow, loves laying under the car, riding in
the car and wagging her tail. She is very low maintenance. She just
needs a safe place to hang out and be loved. You look in her eyes
and all you see is sweetness. To an intruder all they would see is a
big scary looking dog. Does this sound like something you would like
to do? I really would appreciate it. Please contact me at
Skye3284@yahoo.com or
1410019. My name is Andrea.

a. 2% "tax" At Bancomer - I am
not certain whether the 2% Bancomer is with-holding is a (Hacienda)
tax on cash transactions or not. What I do know is that dollar to
peso exchanges (from a dollar account to a peso account e.g.) should
be done online to avoid the charge. Avoid the cashier. - Rob
b. If You Should Spot Our Pink Computer -
On Friday night (9 Oct.) our house in Las Tunas was burglarized. In
addition to Roger's vintage dark brown leather shoulder bag, his
green Crocs (!), and our Timex watches, the thieves took our pink
Acer notebook computer (10.5 inches, maybe 2 pounds--a mini)and a
really pretty metal and bead bookmark commemorating Helen Keller. A
pink computer is pretty unusual, so please let us (or better, the
police) know if you spot it. Thanks, Sandra and Roger - Sandra

a. I have had a TON of requests regarding
the outriggers from our 24-foot Skipjack. Here is some additional
information: They are white, two-piece fiberglass with stainless
steel bases that attach to the boat (no cranks) and stainless steel
tips where the line comes out. They are 15 feet 9 inches long
(including the stainless steel bases) and the line feeds up thru the
insides of the tubes. At the base of each one is a sticker from the
manufacturer that reads: Angler's Specialties, 3198-A Airport Loop
Drive, Costa Mesa, CA 92628. They have always been stored inside, so
the fiberglass is not degraded at all. One of them has a little
black pulley-thing on it and the other has a stainless steel curley
clip. They are in like-new condition. They can be seen at my house
in Cabo San Lucas. Sorry I don't have pix available, I do not have a
digital camera. I am asking 400 seastars for the pair. I can be
