USED CLOTHING CROSSING THE BORDER
I just read an email regarding crossing the border with used
clothing for hurricane victims. They were searched and told they
could not bring used clothing into Mexico. They went back to Chula
Vista, gave the clothes away and then resumed their trip south. Same
problem with their friends at Tecate. Suggestion is to put clothing
into suit cases or duffle bags not large plastic trash bags. Cheryl

Dollars to Pesos
Perhaps I'm missing something here. If I am, I'd sure appreciate
knowing. For years, whenever we want pesos, we go to one of the
ubiquitous Caijeros Automatica (ATMs) all over the place, plug in
our ATM card, punch a few buttons and out comes pesos. Couldn't be
simpler. Our contacts in Baja Sur say there has been no change in
that regard. Costs a small fee, but if time is money, saving a wait
in a bank lineup is very worth it. To be sure, I'm talking about
Canuck bucks to pesos. Should be the same for the Yankee dollar, no?

California Car in Baja
This information appeared in BPE a while back and is substantially
correct:
Other---
I keep a California-registered pickup at my house near Los Barriles.
I have re-registered it every year since 2005 without a smog check.
My method is to submit the registration papers, including the smog
test exemption request form (available on line) by mail to the DMV
in Sacramento, together with a letter in which I (1) explain that
the vehicle is located 1,000 miles south of the border; (2) state
that I have no plans to return it to California within the
foreseeable future; and (3) promise that if I do ever bring it back
to California, I will have it smog tested immediately. Most years,
this has been successful on the first attempt. Once, a couple of
years ago, I was initially rejected and had to challenge the
rejection by writing an even longer letter of explanation, which was
accepted. Since then, I have made a point of enclosing copies of the
previous year’s correspondence with my application and have (thus
far) had no further problems.

Allow me to add one thing:
The DMV form where you fill out your statement of facts about why
you want a smog exemption -- the form Chris is referring to above
--- states specifically that you can't get an exemption if your car
is garaged in Nevada or Mexico. That's what I was told by the clerk
pointing to the very form, and so was I turned away and told that I
would just have to drive that car back to the United States of
America to have it smogged. Bummer.
Well, it turns out that Chapter 27 of the DMV Regulations does say
something like that, but it refers to PARTS of Mexico, not just
"Mexico". And then it goes on to spell out that you can't get an
exemption from passing the smog test if your car is garaged in 1.
Tecate or 2. Tijuana or 3. Tijuana Norte, wherever that is. You get
the idea -- the border. Any other place in Mexico, yer ok.
So if you get turned down by the State of California DMV, recite a
little chapter and verse, and get the DMV clerk to look it up in
Chapter 27 of the Book. And then the language suggested by Chris
supra works like a charm, the part about how you have NO plans to
return it to California, within the FORESEEABLE future; and if you
do you will have it smog tested IMMEDIATELY. If you're doing this in
person, as I was, make sure you sound sincere, because you may have
to repeat it more than once, like to a supervisor. Remember --
Chapter 27.
