Thanks to all who have responded so generously and
kindly in your concern for our local dog Chata. Here is the latest
information on her situation.
Chata was taken to Amigos Veterinary Clinic in North
Beach yesterday for a surgery to remove the very large tumors on her
mammary glands. However, upon further examination it was determined
that there are more tumors than originally diagnosed. Underneath the
two large tumors are many smaller ones. Due to her age,
approximately 13 mas o manos, the vets feel that is not in her best
interest to embark on what would have to be two major surgeries done
six months apart to allow for optimal healing. Neither of the
visible tumors have any lesions or secretions.
The doctors recommend that Chata return to her home
behind Chapitos' to enjoy the rest of her life as she is. She is not
in any pain and still has a good appetite despite being very thin.
It was discovered at her examination that her teeth are in very poor
condition so she cannot eat dry dog food. As many of you know she
does love hot dogs!! Please stop when you see her, give her a little
love and a hot dog or two.......you can also drop off cans of wet
dog to Ernestina who owns Chata.
Since Chata is not having surgery and donations were
collected for her benefit they can be refunded by ALMA. If you would
like a refund please email almacares@hotmail.com
If no refund is requested this money will be used at a later date to
provide care for the next serious case that surely will come along.
With regards to the dog from a ranch near El
Cardonal.....this large dog had a seriously injured rear leg. During
a botched attempt to repair this leg, done by a medic with the
Mexican army, the lower portion of the leg was
reattached.....BACKWARDS!!!!!! Whether this was done in ignorance or
is a result of a very sick sense of humor we will never know.
What we do know is that this dog needs care. He has been evaluated
and is scheduled for an amputation next Wednesday as there is no
hope of repairing this leg.
ALMA is very grateful and appreciative to all who give
support to help the animals of this area.
For more information about ALMA see our website at www.almacares.com

I am in need of ATV tires. Has anyone found a good place in Cabo,
San Jose or LaPaz that they are readily available in most sizes
"right off the rack" so they don't have to order them? And at a
reasonable price? Or has anyone gotten tires from a local person in
Los Barriles that they felt was reliable (as I am sure they would
have to order them) and competitively priced? Contact Doug at

Otay Mesa Border Crossing - We returned from Todos to CA Feb 1 via
the Otay Mesa crossing rather than the main TJ route. The route is
on the AAA Baja map but it is not marked on the road, so here are
directions if you want to try it:
Take the toll or "cuota" from Ensenada north. About 5 mi south of
Rosarito, watch for the Calafia resort and take the next exit to the
"libre" road. If you come to the 2nd toll gate, you just missed it;
you can take the next exit and go back south on the libre, but you
have to pay the $3 toll. From Calafia, go north on the libre and
watch for a stop light at a 4-lane to the right (east) marked
"Corridor Tijuana-Rosarito." There is no sign of any kind on the
cuota. AAA shows it going to El Florido, but this is not marked on
the road either. The Corridor is a new, US-style freeway that runs
east about 18 mi, where it meets Hwy 2 to Tecate. It then turns
north about 7 mi to Hwy 20 -- the cuota to Mexicali. It was almost
empty when we went thru. It has large signs to "Garita Otay" --
UNTIL you get to the Hwy 20 intersection. Here, take the side marked
"San Diego." This turns back west about 3 mi and ends in an urban
4-lane avenue. Continue about 1 mi, pass a McDonald's on the right;
at the next intersection, turn right -- it is marked "Garita Otay."
It's about one mi to the crossing. We hit Otay at rush hour and it
took 90 min. Don't know if it would have been even longer at main TJ.
Advantages of this route: road in great condition; little traffic;
interesting views of TJ underside; less confusing border approach.
Enjoy! - Paul & Arayah, paul@summerinspect.com
