ATM Alert!!!

I went to the ATM machine to make a draw and it showed I had just a little bit of money in the account, which I knew was wrong. I then went to the bank and found out that someone had accessed my account with Bancomer, pretty much wiped my account out and the bank said they must of put a reader on the machine and got my number and pin number in Cabo. . There were many charges in Guadalajara and Mexico City and not thru the internet, these were stores. One lady at the bank said she heard that this had happened before at the Costco ATM. A wonderful employee named Luke at Bancomer, across from Immigrations, helped me straighten this out, got right on the phone and dealt with it, canceled my card and gave me a new one and they credited my account immediately even tho he said it would take aprox 26 days. They are suggesting you don't use the ATM machines and take your card to Bancomer directly for money and also don't use ATM machines that are isolated even tho Bancomer has camera's on their machines. He is going to tell his boss and maybe they can look at the tapes to see who the culprits were. So, Beware!!

We had been using What A Frame in Cabo, but the owner is moving and may or may not reopen. We need to find a place where we can have frames made. We would prefer
the Cabo area, but would be happy if there are better framers in the La Paz area. Please respond to the BPE as we are sure that others can use a good framer, too.
Thanks, Jim

Yesterday, coming back from La Paz, I could have sworn that we passed a small brown UPS van with a uniformed driver at the wheel. Is there now UPS in Baja? bajaponyexpress3@gmail.com

TELEPHONE DISCUSSION

a. I believe that you do not have to top up your minutes every 3 months..I do not have to. They do become inactive after 3 months but when you put on more minutes the old ones become active again. Also, you can program your phone for the messages to be in English…maybe someone could put those instructions on BPE? We have purchased minutes at Chapito’s pharmacy or from the cell phone stand that used to be opposite Chapito’s. I always buy 2 cards so that when I return, I can immediately top up my phone and get it reactivated immediately. Be sure that the cards you buy will not expire before you return though!

b. There is mis-info about the pay-as-you-go TelCel system
Put 100 pesos on your phone and the time will last for one month
Put 200 pesos on your phone and the time will last for two months
Put more than 200 pesos on the phone, it will still only last two months.
You do NOT lose your minutes, as they stay as long as it has not been idle for 6 months.
If you have not put money on the phone in 6 months you lose your number and will need to buy another SIM card. (that will cost about 300 pesos)
If you have a Mex. phone that has been unlocked, you can just switch SIM cards at the border and your phone will work, as long as they are the same model. Mine was an inexpensive Nokia. I do this when traveling back and forth from the states. Just got tired of having to carry two phones back and forth.
I have used a pay as you go now for over ten years.
You might want to post this to correct the other mis-info.

c.  • Telcel (which I have) is a good cell phone option for calling locally or for emergencies. But, the down side is the phone messages are in Spanish (so you might need someone to translate) and you have to add minutes every 3 months (at least) or it will go inactive and you will lose your number and minutes. I have problems with losing my number and minutes as getting minutes in Los Barriles has been a problem. I have had to leave the phone with someone and have them add $100 paso every 3 months....what a pain. They do have great coverage around the Baja. I would not use it to call the States as it will be expensive. Phones are pay as you go. There is no where in the states to get Telcel minutes that I have found.

Hope this helps someone else out too. Thank you to everyone for providing me with the information!!
Chris

b. La Mordida Lives! - My family and I headed north from Todos on New Years Eve on our 7th baja drive. We encountered the police in Ciudad Constitution where I was pulled over for "not speeding". I was doing 40 km and watching speed limit but had Nevada plates. Officer Ladron informed me of my "infraccion" but had no radar, tried to take my DL but I would not release my grip. He told me I would need to stay in town for 5 days to pay fine of 500 pesos as his office was closed for holiday. Did not issue ticket but after lengthy wrangling session he agreed to take 450 pesos "to pay for me." It was clear this guy had practiced his technique; my first bite and it hurt. Watch yourself in Ciudad Constitution while "driving while gringo." Any advice from veterans on how to handle this sort of situation? I was advised to get a spare drivers' license so you can keep driving if the cop wins the tug of war, and this I will do.
