I would like to recommend a good upholsterer, who we used to cover 3
chairs and an ottoman. He also made curtains and pillows for us and
is working on a tablecloth. Very nice work and very reasonable
prices. We provided our own material and the price for the chairs
was $1,200. PESOS each , this included two which were covered in
leather.
He picked up the furniture and delivered it to us. Leonardo also has
fabric samples. Tapiceria En General. Leonardo Banaga Nieto Cel 624

FM2 Surprises & Importation of Vehicles: This year we decided to
“upgrade” our immigration status to FM2. After we received the
documents, we started hearing about problems various people, who
were citizens or had FM2s and driving a car with US plates, had when
stopped by Federal Police. You probably know that it is illegal for
a Mexican to drive a vehicle with US or Canadian license plates
(unless the owner is in the car). When you have your FM2 or if you
have received your Mexican citizenship, according to Mexico, you are
now Mexican. Therefore, it is illegal for you to be driving your car
that has US or Canadian plates here in Mexico! You can be fined or
your car could be confiscated. It may be a matter of showing the
police the “correct” paperwork if stopped with US plates; your US
registration, your US driver’s license, etc. But if they happen to
ask for your tourist visa or FM3, and you show them an FM2 or
citizenship papers, there’s the problem. It just depends on the
Federal Police who stop you - they can make it difficult for you if
they want to.
Our solution was to have our vehicles imported, get Baja license
plates and Mexican driver’s licenses, and purchase Mexican auto
insurance. We were helped easily through most of this process by
Oscar Unzón Camacho who lives in La Paz. He can tell by the VIN if
your car can be imported (right now they allow 2010, and cars 2005
and older, but no “luxury” cars (VIN starts with a letter)), and if
it can, the importation process takes about 48 hours. He can also
help you get the license plates. Oscar was head of Customs in La Paz
and San Jose for many years, and knows the rules and the people to
work with to get things done legally, and he is very trustworthy.
You can contact him at
os_car_import@hotmail.com or
os_car_import@yahoo.com.mx or call him on his cell phone
at 612-154-9577. He doesn’t speak much English, but he does
understand most of it.

Dish Network is coming to Mexico. Dish has opened a new office in La
Paz on the corner of Isabel la Catolica and Legaspi - phone 612 129
3474. The cost is $149 pesos for Basic (32 channels) and $199 pesos
for Basic Plus (16 additional). According to the proprietor of the
shop, the channels are in Spanish, but if there is an English
version, English can be selected. The shop owner speaks perfect
English. The dish is the same size as the dish in the US (small
dish), here is it bright red in color.

BROWN SHORTS! (wink-wink!)
a. WE also saw a UPS van when we were on the way home from Cabo on
Tuesday. I called yesterday to UPS in Burlington, WA to see if they
could deliver a package to us in LB. After giving them some
information about my package they said it will take about a week.
Sherry
b. Is that what those numbers are all about that are posted on some
houses and businesses?
I'm not sure why we don't have a number? Cheryl
c. Yep, I passed a UPS van about 10 days ago on Hwy 1 around Rancho
Verde. Lane
d. yes there is its been here for a while and it highly expensive! -
t
e. Yes, there is UPS in Baja Sur. We have received a document from
the US (cost was about 45.00 US) and have sent a document to the US
(cost was about 20.00 US! Go Figure...).

f. That same van passed us. And we found out from UPS that they do
make deliveries down here. Sherry Kelly is having a parcel delivered
to the delegacion in L.B. and they will call her when it arrives and
she can pick it up.
g. That's how I sent my FM3 was UPS to Francis it went to La Paz.

Cherisse and Dieter's Car fire
Our car caught fire last week due to possible faulty wiring. It was
just sitting in the driveway out of use overnight and caught fire in
the next afternoon.
Thanks to all who helped. The caretakers at Quinta Maria were heroic
in their efforts and managed to tow the burning car inferno away
form our Casas even after the wheels had burned off.
Just wanted to thanks everyone involved and glad no one got hurt.
Tips and Lessons learned:
Water is useless in a car fire especially with our minimal pressure,
fire extinguishers did not do great either. None of us thought to
use shovels and dirt.
The police and a fireman put the fire out quickly once they arrived
by simply shoveling a ton of sand & dirt on the fire. If I had
thought to throw blankets and dirt on the fire at the beginning it
could have saved our new kite gear that was lost in the inferno.
Another observation is that the next day after our fire we noticed a
mouse crawling on the front of our neighbors car behind the grill.
Mice may have been the root cause. we have not figured out what to
do about the possible mouse problem but thought it was worth
mentioning. I have been told it is not unusual for a car to catch
fire just sitting in a driveway out of use. As long as your battery
is hooked up there is a possibility.

FRAME SHOPS
a. In response to the search of a frame shop in the Cabo area....the
Ida Victoria Gallery in San Jose del Cabo has a frame shop in house.
The owner is Peter and he does a great job. I'm in the States and
don't have the phone #, but you can find it in the Gringo Gazette.
You can't miss the gallery, it's purple and is the tallest building
in San Jose. Lynn
b. For frames I would suggest Pete at Galleria Ida Victoria in the
art district in San Jose del Cabo. Check out the work there too.
It's quite good and some of our local La Ribera artists have work
there.

TELEPHONE DISCUSSION:
a. I have tried Verizon, Net 2 phone and am now using MagicJack and
I love it. Of course we are in Las Barracas almost to Cabo Pulmo and
have to have Satellite Internet via Hughsnet but I am finding that
for the price of the MagicJack approx 40 us dollars I can call all
over US and Canada, not Mexico yet, for nothing and all I use is my
internet and a funky only touch tone phone. Magic Jack has no
monthly charge but does have a yearly charge if approx. 20 us
dollars per YEAR. That's it. I do have the business plan via Hughnet
so maybe that is why I get better reception out here but I talk to
my parents every day in Virginia and call my grandson in California,
my friends in Chicago and there is a minimal delay. For the price
and the convenience it is well worth it. One thing I did notice is
that when I am going to use the phone I don't use the satellite
radio or the internet while I am talking and it works much better.
Also if someone calls me, it is like they are next door especially
if they are using a cell phone. OK That's it...Hope this helps..
b. Check out the NEW Viva Mexico Plan from AT&T. It's for US
customers that want to travel in Mexico. You just upgrade your
current plan, around $15 for the family plan a month, and it uses
your US minutes with no additional charges, unlike the International
calling plans that costs .59 a minute. When in Mexico you can call
the US as well as other phones in Mexico and It uses your plan
minutes, even to TelCel customers. Leave the plan on your phone when
you return to the US and calls to Mexico are covered under your plan
minutes, plus all the additional features work. When your done
traveling in Mex you can always change your plan back.
Plan features include:
* Rollover® Minutes, only from AT&T
* Anytime Minutes and 1000 Night & Weekend Minutes to use in the
U.S. and Mexico
* A-List with Rollover® – unlimited calling to your favorite
numbers. Customers must be on a qualifying Nation plan with a
monthly recurring charge (MRC) of $59.99 (900+ minutes) and above
for individual line customers (up to 5 numbers, including wired
numbers), or $89.99 (1400+ minutes) and above for FamilyTalk group
customers (sharing up to 10 numbers, including wired numbers).
* Mobile to Mobile calling to over 81 million other wireless
customers (in the U.S. only)
http://www.wireless.att.com
/learn/international/viva-mexico.jsp
We used the ViVa Mexico plan in November and it worked as described.
Mobile to Mobile uses minutes from both users while in Mexico. Keep
data roaming off and only turn it on to download your emails, then
turn it back off again. In the 3 weeks while in Mexico we used
around 9 MB of data checking emails daily and not downloading
pictures, that will suck too much data. Don't surf the net, that
will suck up Data quickly and cost you big money, use wi-fi hotspot.
Upgrade your data plan if you think you will be checking you e-mail
a lot, $24 for 20MB. Use the wi-fi hot spots in town to down load
emails instead and no charges will in cure. I did call Mexico from
the US and the line quality could have been better. I also noticed
that I could not call US 1-800 #'s from my phone. We have IPhones so
you can reset the phone statistics and check your minutes used, data
used, turn off data roaming, stop pushed e-mails and you get Great
reception in LB unlike the Hood. Not a perfect plan, but a good
option.
Note: AT&T Existing ViVi Mexico Customers - Log into your AT&T
wireless plan acct.
Go to Manage Features you can add extra data MB, international
texting etc...
IPhone users:
Turn off pushed E-Mails : Settings; mail, contacts, calendars; fetch
new data; push = off; fetch = manually; advanced = manual
Reset phone usage Stats minutes and data used: settings; general;
usage; reset statistics, do this when you arrive in Mex.
Turn off data roaming : Settings; general; network; turn off data
roaming; turn off 3g to save battery life.
Warm Regards!!
Nacho
c. Can someone please provide details on the Moviestar cell phones.
We're told it is a cheap way to call the US. Thanks, Peter
lindaypeter@gmail.com
d. I have had a cheap Nokia Telcel phone for nearly 5 years. I put
pesos in it often while I am here. I have never lost the phone
number, have had the same cell number for nearly 5 years. I put 200
pesos, and I get 200 pesos worth of calls and its for a limited
time, that those 200 pesos lasts, usually about 60 days to use my
200 pesos. If I put 500 pesos on my telcel phone I get 1000 pesos
worth of calls. I have never had to buy another SIM card since I
bought the cell phone from Veronica. Usually, by the time I leave in
May, I still have a few pesos left on the phone which never 'role'
over...I always have to buy more time when I return about 5 months
later.
So, this information that appeared on the Baja Pony today is not
totally accurate with a telcel cell phone that I have. Sylvia
