Another story to add to the Cabo airport shake down list.
We dropped a friend off at the front of terminal 3 and
immediately were approached by police.
We had a couple propane tanks in the car. We had planned on getting
them filled by Cali gas on our return trip to LB. The police were
furious and it was a possible federal offense to pull up to the
airport with perceived explosive material.
We went round and round with them, we did not have our registration
with us so we flooded them with a load of expired car papers and
insurance papers we had in the car. We plead innocent and uninformed
we really did not think about the implications of having propane in
the car and pulling up to an airport. We should have known better
but have done this many times in the past.
The police were telling us there would fines and we could see they
we not planning on letting us off the hook. Both of us were thinking
the worst especially because our FM3's are in La Paz for renewal.
Our paperwork was not in good order.
We got off by a weird quirk of fate.
A woman in a new Hummer arrived just in time with a flat tire from
running out the wrong way on spikes from the parking lot. She was
wearing see-through clothing. The cops immediately became a lot more
interested in her and we immediately got away they just let us go
without another word.
Anyhow 2 things we learned,
1. Do not take gas bottles to the airport it could be a federal
offense.
2. It is probably best to avoid the cops all together by just going
into the pay parking lot even for a short drop off. It is cheap
insurance against any cop encounter.
It seems like the cops there are looking for deep
pockets and fortunately for us our old explorer looked a lot less
promising than the brand new hummer with a half naked silly woman
who drove out over the spikes.

In a previous issue "about a year ago" there was a stock broker from
the cabo area that put a notice in the BPE, and I didn't save the
info. Does anyone remember who it was or does anyone know of a
reputable broke in the area? Must speak good English. J. Ted Plombon

TELEPHONE DISCUSSION
a. I have the AT&T Mexico plan & it is great. but was told do NOT
use my phone INSIDE Mexico to call Mexican phone numbers or i will
receive an additional (HIGH) charge. it is for calling FROM the U.S.
to Mexico, or FROM Mexico to the U.S., but NOT inside Mexico. i
guess it's OK to call vonage numbers as they are not Mexican
numbers. Carlos Slim gets a piece of the action for every call made
within Mexico so beware! Cathie Smith
cabocathie@gmail.com.
b. I also have a Nokia Telcel pay as you go phone and there has been
a year in between usage sometimes. I have never lost my phone number
either and if you buy 500 pesos of time you get 1000p. time. For
people wanting a 'land 'line', I have used magic jack and it works
wonderfully. I think their service is substantially better than it
was when they first started and they now have a 52 area code
available. Joy
