ANSWERS TO BIRD QUESTIONS

a.      Sorry Cheryl. Nothing specific written for our section of Baja .... except the picture book I did of 120 photos of 101 birds of Baja www.viovio.com/bajajohn.  Not really meant to be a field guide ... but shows photos of most of the land birds the birds in an 8X10 format. Do you think that such a book is needed for our area? ... would like your views.
Would suggest either (Big) Sibley's (Guide to the Birds - National Audubon) or the (Little) Sibleys Field Guide Western Edition (found a copy in La Paz bookstore). Also could recommend both of the Peterson Field Guides "Mexican Birds" and "Western Birds" .... these last two guides separate the images into plates at the middle and entries elsewhere. The definative book is of course, the Howell and Webb "A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Central America". Book and covers everything in Mexico, but doesn't concentrate on South Baja. There's a lot of second hand books available on the web.
I have written a checklist of about 300 species found in southern Baja ... a few years (and a couple of species) out of date, but will send it to you if you like. It's a .pdf format and prints on 81/2 X 11 format - 3 or 4 pages.

b. There is a "Mexico Field Guide"-plastic laminated- which identifies 60 birds for Baja, Sea of
Cortez, the Pacific coast.
Rainforest Publications, Robert Dean Illustrator- pub. 2002

c. Go to: www.bcsbirds.com
There are thumbnail pics of birds A to Z that can be enlarged and give names .

d. "Mexican Birds" Peterson Field Guides, Roger Tory Peterson/Edward L Chalif
"A Guide to the Birds of Mexico and Northern Central America, Steve N.G. Howell and Sophie Webb, Oxford University Press

e. Field guides for Baja Birds. There are many wonder choices, check them out at Amazon.
My favorite Mexico Bird Books:
Guide to the Birds of Mexico ....., by Steve Howell y Webb Note: comprehensive big and heavy!
Bird finding Guide to Mexico, by S. Howell (Where to go)
Birds of Baja California, by S. Wilbur (out of print - research on endemics that have changed in 20 years)
Since there are only a few endemics here in Baja (eight species according to American Ornithologist Union 7th edition) any North American field guide works well for Baja:
National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, Fifth Edition, by Jon Dunn
Kaufman Field Guide to Birds of North America, by Kenn Kaufman (2005)
The Sibley Guide to Birds, by David A. Sibley
I carry Kaufman when hiking due to its small size, clear images and ease of use but own all of the above and more. One is never enough.

a. I am sad to report that I am forced to sell the beautiful 35’ sportfisher "En Caliente". I feel like a failure giving in to my handicap, however, a good friend reminded me that I was successful in bringing the joy of big game sportfishing to many disabled anglers from all over the world as far away as New Zealand. The "En Caliente" now resides in the new marina in San Jose. It is my hope that a Ponyland reader will know of someone who would appreciate this fine yacht so I might charter her back in the future. She is perfect as the floating condo by night and the sportfishing battleship by day. With her 400 mile range she’s ready to cruise the sea of cortez or spend a month in mag bay. She is listed with Picante Sportfishers in Cabo for less than ½ of what I have invested and can be seen at
