NEW BAKERY IN LOS BARRILES; Just to let you know that there
is a new Bakery in Los Barriles. They are right at the Bus
Stop up on the Highway. They have great Mexican pan de dulce
and also do cakes or anything you would like. The guys are
great with lots of experience, both of them work at Hotel
Buenavista. Chef Freddy Medel and his sous chef are in
charge of the operation there. They can also help you with
any catering you need. These guys are top of the notch. They
cook from Mexican to anything else you can imagine. Give
them a try and you won’t regret. If you need more
information or contact them you can give them a call to
044-624-122-5019. Thank you.

ROAD
REPORT - TECATE to LOS BARRILES
Instead of going thru L.A., I took Hwy. 58 out of
Buttonwillow, and went thru Bakersfield to Hwy. 395. Then
395 to I-15 to I-215 to I-15, and on to Tecate. Some
construction at the first 15/215 jct., but the rest was
smooth going; beat the hell outta going thru L.A.
At Tecate I got the green lite, but pulled in to the
inspection area to go to Immigration. They wouldn't let me
park there--said I had to go park on the street somewhere
(yeah right!)--then walk back. But as long as I was there,
they decided to inspect my cargo. I gave them my list and
receipts, they took a cursory look, and I was outta there.
(NOTE: At the Ag. checkpoint at G. Negro, Immigration
checked my immigration papers (FM3 booklet). He didn't ask
for that new FMM form, but went thru the FM3 page by page,
and didn't mention anything about it not being stamped at
the border.)
I took the Hwy 2D route out of Tecate, as written up in
the Pony a while back--it was a little different than as
described; here's a quick write up based on my odometer.
After crossing the border at Tecate, continue south on
Calle Cardenas until you come to the park at Ave. Juarez.
Turn left one block to Calle Ortiz Rubio (Hwy 3), then turn
right. Follow Hwy 3 up the hill to the Hwy 2D cuota turn-off
(about 2 miles from the border). Take the on-ramp and get on
Hwy 2D towards TJ.
Stay on 2D until you get to the first toll booth, about
16 miles ($85 pesos). 2D splits here; get in the left lanes
(signs say Matamoras) as you leave the toll booth. You'll
then see the sign with the big horn sheep statue; turn left
towards Matamoras. Stay on this road until until it ends
(about 26 miles); you will see the Hwy 1D overpass and the
sea. (NOTE: There are quite a few pot holes in the right
lane; some are big. It is a concrete road, so pay heed;
large concrete chuck holes can do severe damage to your
front end.) Go under Hwy 1D, and turn left (south) at Hwy 1
at the signs towards Ensenada. Head south on Hwy 1; the Hwy
1D cuota on-ramp is about 8 miles away.
After passing the "Welcome to Pto. Nuevo" sign (about
5-1/2 miles), start watching for stop signs. (Note: Before
getting to the 1D south on-ramp, there's another easy-to-see
on or off-ramp for 1D; DON'T TAKE IT. I saw several cars try
as I went by, and they wound up backing out; not good.) At
the 3rd stop sign, there's a short, left turn lane; get in
it. Look left, and you'll see the TJ/Ensenada on-ramp sign.
Take the Ensenada (south) ramp, and go. Toll booth is about
29 miles down the road ($30). There's a new (for me)
military check point here, north bound just north of the
toll booth.
About 6 miles from the stop sign in the center of
Maneadero, road construction starts and goes for 5 miles.
The inspection road at the next check point was worse than
the construction dirt road.
Stayed at the Baja Cactus at El Rosario. trucks coming
down the hill on their jake brakes kept me awake most of the
nite; first time there for that--it's usually reasonably
quiet. Something was going on at the previous check point at
the top of the hill. Military was going thru everything, and
was even unloading semis. The guy in front of me had
weapons, and I had to wait about half an hour while they
checked him out.
A few miles of construction past Rosarito, then lots of
new road; construction road was graded smooth.
Bridge construction between San Ignacio and Sta.
Rosalia, but no delays or problems.
Stayed at Serinadad in Mulege. Bed was comfortable and
room was clean, but no TV or furniture except for a single
chair; one pint of bottled water (for 2 people?), but no
cups. All for $780/nite; it was my first and last time at
this place.
Most of the road thru the Baja Grand Canyon south of
Loreto was new.
Cops at Cd. Constitucion were at the north end of town,
pulling over anybody with gringo plates. Wanted to write me
up for no seat belt, because it didn't have a shoulder
harness. But I showed them that was all my car had. No
ticket, but they kept me there for about 10 minutes.
One police check point and one road block--a couple of
miles apart--on the south road outta La Paz. Check point
ignored me; road block went thru my rig.
Final leg to Los Barriles was uneventful. Ken
