ROAD REPORTS

a. I just drove down, crossing at Tecate early Monday AM, and took the normal route to Ensenada, pulling a cargo trailer. The road construction is only for the first 10 - 20 miles (sorry I didn't track it better), and I didn't think it was all that bad. Traffic moved at a fairly good clip, and there were opportunities to pass the real slow trucks along the way. Then there were nice stretches of new road after that. I've never taken the other route, so don't know if it is worth it. I found the road construction south of Ensenada to be worse, actually. Expect bridge and road construction the whole way down the peninsula.

b.      We crossed at Otay Mesa on October 1 and got our FM2's stamped, and left there at about 9:30. If you do go through here, the only place to park is in the customs declaration area, you must have a customs officer check your load, and / or declare your "declarable" items. We had nothing to declare, and got a little green slip to give 1/2 to the lady at the exit booth, then the other half to the man at the exit gate.
We exited the customs area and started looking for the highway that comes out at Rosarito (Blvd Tijuana 2000), and we turned a bit soon, so wandered around in Tijuana! After stopping and asking directions about 4 times, we finally found it, and it was a piece of cake after that. It does come out on the free road, and you'll need to travel quite a way south before you can get on the toll road. I'm going to print out a Google map of that area if we ever go that way again!
After we got through Ensenada and Maneadero, we got in to some pretty intense road construction. They are cutting down the hills and smoothing the corners from that park (where the old military stop was located several years ago) all the way to Santo Tomas. Detour lanes are quite narrow. Perhaps if you went through on a Sunday it wouldn't be too bad, but there were a lot of cargo trucks that slowed things down, plus the construction stops. Just plan on it taking longer than you'd think it might. We made it to El Rosario at about 4:30pm and stayed in the Baja Cactus hotel (first hotel past the Pemex, and a secure courtyard to park your rig). Can't beat $350 pesos for a single room, and they are very nice!
There was construction at various other spots along the way, but nothing as intense as south of Maneadero; they're building more new bridges and doing some more corner smoothing. It will be great when they're done!
We went through Ciudad Constitucion on a Sunday, and saw only one policeman at the south end of town. We took the frontage road (had to stop at Coffee Star for a coffee fix) and drove slowly, and stopped at every intersection at either the traffic light or the hidden stop signs (they use one sign for the main highway and the frontage road).
Hotel Serinidad in Mulege opened for the season October 1. We were the only hotel guests on the 2nd, and they had their weekly pig roast! Be sure to stop and stay if you're going through there on a Saturday!
Military stops going south were easy; most waved us through. Only at two stops did they bother to ask where we were coming from or going to or if we were on vacation.
It's good to be back home!
