we're OK. We did't feel anything here in Los Barriles. I think it's
all over the news. Did anyone feel it here on the East Cape?

Monday morning we met some trainers for our "rattlesnake avoidance"
training for our 6 month old puppy. After having the procedure
explained to us, a shock collar was fitted to our 20# dog and a long
leash was attached. The training took place on the entry road to the
Bermuda Dunes airport in a dirt area with bushes on one side. A
snake skin was semi buried. Our dog was walked near the skin and
when she was close by and showing interest, a mild shock was
administered. Next, an 18" long snake was taken out of an ice chest
by hand (!) and placed on the ground. Again our dog was allowed to
come near the snake and start to sniff it and was again shocked. She
did a couple of whirls and tried to shake off the collar. The snake
was muzzled with surgical tape and could not strike. The handler
said that she would not put our dog in jeopardy and that is why she
handled the snake bare handed.
This was repeated with 2 more snakes, different types of rattlers
and about 3 ft or more in length. Basically our dog learned very
quickly that she did not want anything to do with snakes. After each
zapping, she was allowed to calm down, patted, and she had no
dramatic reaction to the momentary shocking. In our opinion this was
a well thought out procedure and one we will repeat next fall. The
benefits certainly out weigh the short term discomfort to our buddy.
