A.L.M.A. would like to thank all of the community
volunteers, both Mexican and extranjeros, who made the first
Ministry of Health, DIF and A.L.M.A. spay and neuter clinic here in
Los Barriles a great success. As we say in Spanish: "Juntos hacemos
la differencia - Together we make a difference!"

The Rotary Club Los Barriles Cabo Este has just
completed the first stage of our Diabetes screening program. During
the City Celebration this last month our Rotary Club focused our
efforts on helping identify, educate and treat local residents with
their issues related to Diabetes. Our local Rotary club has received
an international grant of $30k with help from four US Rotary clubs
and Rotary International.
With Diabetes as one of the major health issues in
Mexico we felt it appropriate to focus our attentions on prevention
and education. During the City Celebration we set up at the Concha a
screening booth where we performed glucose screening, blood pressure
checks and educational material disbursement. During the event we
screened over 110 people including the Mayor and Police department.
The results of the days efforts were, of the 110 people
screened 41% of them had elevated levels of glucose in their system
and 33% had high blood pressure. We are continuing to work with
those identified on education and treatment.
Our next public screening will be in April, but is you
know of anybody that should be screened now have them proceed to the
Amerimed Clinic and ask for the free screening. We hope to impact
not only people that currently have Diabetes but through education
and dietary changes our goal is to have a long term impact on
reducing this disease. If you would like to know more about our

On Jan 14, 2012 Rotary will be hosting three events in conjunction
with Lord of the Winds. First we will be holding a pancake breakfast
on the beach at the Lord of the Winds venue. The pancake breakfast
costing just $5 will be held from 9am till 10:30am Saturday Jan
14th.
In conjunction with the pancake breakfast we will be
holding two events to show your stuff. First starting at 8am will be
the Run with the Wind 5k run/walk event. For those of you who like
to walk or run this is a perfect wake up event one you don't want to
miss. Prizes, T-shirts and the pancake breakfast are included. The
divisions will include men, women, over 60 men women and under 12
boys and girls. After your run enjoy the pancake breakfast all
included for your $25 donation to Rotary's community projects.
Starting at 10am will be the first East Cape Booce Ball
Championship Tournament. This Tournament will determine who is the
best Booce Ball team in the East Cape. Four person teams will
compete on the beach at the Lord of the Winds. Whether your are an
experienced Booce Ball tosser or just somebody that wants to have a
good time join us for this event. If you have a team then sign up as
one or if you want to be assigned to a team that is great also. The
cost of the Tournament is just $10 including pancake breakfast and
awards.

RECYCLE BAGS AVAILABLE: If you are trying to organize
your recycles in your home/garage/kitchen, this could be the answer.
We have located two different sets of polyethylene recycle bags that
velcro together so they stand up and stay open. Flexible, waterproof
bags with handles, so when recycle day comes around, you simply grab

TREE SPRAYING
(1) The spraying that was conducted in Los Barriles last week
was targeting the whole community and was free. In my neighborhood
the foreman asked me to point out any other trees which may be in my
neighbors' yards. These trees were also sprayed. The insect HLB (huanglongbing)
attacks only citrus trees and has been found in San Jose. The State
Department for the Health of Vegetation has completed their canvas
of this area I believe. But you are asked to report any suspicious
infestation on your citrus to them at 613-13-22651
(2) Our citrus trees were sprayed last week and now I see lots
of green leaves on the ground! Is anyone else having this

Today's bird is the Gray Thrasher. This bird is
endemic (only found in) Baja, Mexico. He is in the family called
Minidae, which includes the Northern Mockingbird. This family is
noted for their loud and varied songs and mimicry (hence the family
name). In our area this bird is the only bird that has a long
decurved bill and spotted breast. He is a slender bird, about 10
inches long (robin sized) with short rounded wings. Sexes are alike
and ages differ slightly. The bright yellow eyes separate him from
other Mimidaes. He spends much of his time on the ground, digging
with his very long bill for insects, grubs and seeds. The spots on
his breast are unusual in that they are trianglar shaped. Although
usually silent and sulky, he often perchs high to sing. The nest is
a bulky cup of twigs at low to mid-levels. Eggs are laid in spring
or summer, 2 to 4, bluish-white to greenish blue, mottled with
brown. He is quite common and seen often.....John Spencer, La Ribera
