BAJA SKIES FOR SATURDAY MORNING AND EVENING (Nov. 10):
There are lots of sky events Saturday beginning at 5:04:41 am for
early risers. That is when the International Space Station, at an
altitude of 235miles/393km, will appear as a bright planet about 30
degrees above the eastern horizon. It will move slowly towards Punta
Arena for about 2 minutes before dropping out of sight.
In the west, the moon will begin entering the partial shadow of the
Earth about 5:05 am, the full shadow at 5:45 am. At 5:46:41 am there
will be a bright Irridium flare just above the low mountains to the
east of Los Planes. By 6 am Mars will be almost overhead, Saturn
will be high in the eastern sky, and Mercury, which shared evening
star status with Venus two weeks ago, has slipped by the Sun and
will be rising as a morning "star," but binoculars may be needed to
spot it.
The sun rises at 6:51 am, and the moon will be totally eclipsed at
7:05 am. An eclipsed full moon will occur at 7:36 am. Unfortunately,
we will miss the last two events as the moon will have set about 15
minutes earlier. Saturday evening the sun will set about 5:30 pm,
and, if twilight does not linger, nor the mountains block them,
there will be moderately bright flares at 5:50:55 pm and 5:51:45 pm
(Los Barriles 10 seconds earlier), both grazing the mountain tops
almost directly to the west. If you miss all of the above you can
still catch, weather permitting, the "close to full moon" rising
Saturday evening from behind Cerralvo's southern tip at around 5:56
pm. Moon rise Sunday evening should be around 6:50 pm

STARCHOICE INFORMATION: If you're having trouble contacting
Starchoice in Canada, the
following is an 800 number for Mexico. I called it this morning, and
left my Baja phone number
for them to return my call, but that did not happen. I called again
and waited for
approximately 45 minutes before I spoke with a Representative, and
my problem was dealt
with very quickly and efficiently. 001-800-514-0572

New Ice Skating Rink In La Paz? - Courtesy La Paz Gringos - They are
building an ice skating rink on Colosio, [on the Esplanade of the
Municipal Palace in La Paz], across from Chedraui. It opens Dec. 11
and is open for one month from 3 to 11 p.m. No charge for using the

Editor's Note: (BajaWesternOnion)- There was quite a bit of debate
whether this was for real, or just a "Dia De Los Innocentes" prank
(Mexico's April Fools' Day, December 28). Also, where would you buy
ice skates in Baja? However, apparently this is true, and there was
an article about it in

category must have name and/or email address.
a. Just a note to commend Los Barriles' terrific new Zumba and
beginners Yoga instructor, Brigitte. She is a great teacher and the
classes are lots of fun.
We get a great workout no matter what shape we're in! She teaches at
both the Palapa and the Yoga studio. Give it a try....you won't be
sorry. Lynn Burns
ROAD REPORT
a. Easy trip north. Left LB Wed 7 am, arrived San Diego Thurs 4:30
pm
1. Los Barriles to Malarimo in GN 11 hours including a 40 min side
trip to check out the new Villas del Palmar as you come down the
hill toward Loreto at Ligui about 25 min south of Loreto.
2. GN to San Diego including breakfast stop and 2 hours at the
border (avoid San Ysidro crossing north) 12.5 hours
The road is in really good condition except for two places:
coming north: from just north of Jesus Maria to K72 south of Punta
Prieta, there is a 20 min dirt detour. Not really bad, just dirt.
from Santo Tomas north to almost Manedeanaro (south of Ensenada)
K50-41 is a really bad detour, rough, narrow, steep and very poorly
marked. Take care on this one.
Wonderful seafood soup and giant scallops at Malarimo in Guerrero
Negro, and the rooms are much improved, and the water is hot!!
A decent breakfast stop called Mision just north of San Quintin in
Colonia Guerrero K 172 on the west (beach) side of the road just
south of the pemex. Brick red building associated with a small hotel
of the same name and color. Clean and good breakfast and service.
Happy Travels!
