Palmas Valentines Day Update: We will be having a classic
car / off road display out in front on the lobby. Any one
wishing to display their car / truck / small Jeep can arrive
after 1 pm and park. Palmas has invited those, with display
cars, to use the Pool and Hot tub for the afternoon. You
will need to show your dinner ticket. There will be no
judging.
Candle light dinner with soft romantic music will be served
in Tico’s waterfront restaurant at 6:30 pm; Dancing will
start at 7:30 to 9 pm.
Dance contest will start at 9pm with registration starting
at 7:30. Those not wishing to dance, there will be 2 free
pool tables, and hot tub and swimming pool at your disposal.
Tickets for the dinner are $15 and are for sale at Palmas

I am able to buy surplus teaching aids and medical equipment
from University Nevada Reno for the past 3 years. These
items are in need of work. I do all the refurbishing at my
shop in Tahoe and bring them down to LB for the community.
The money generated from Dance Night & the Valentines Party
will go to offset my costs for this year’s items as well as
next year’s items. You can see these items by coming to
Dance Night. They have been on display all winter. These
items will be presented to the schools and the clinic after
Feb 14th. I work thru the parent / teacher league to be sure
the items go to the right place and to collect a list if

Dog deaths/poisonings locally
There have been several "mysterious" deaths/poisonings of
dogs this year in the La Ventana/El Sargento area.
Initially, there was much talk of these being intentional, a
sinister thought in what we know as paradise. A recent case
was caught early, the dogs symptoms closely observed and
with supportive care seems to be on the route to survival,
although is not "out of the cactuses yet". The "parents"
however may not survive after being up 24/7 for 5 days
trying to keep the dog sedated, restained with IVs, cleaning
up vomit, bloody diarrhea and urine.
The good news coming from 5 days of intensive care and
observation is that the toxidrome appears to be that of
puffer fish poisoning and is unlikely to be malicious. The
bad news is that these toxic puffer fish are dead in masses
on the beach, an unfortunate bicatch casualty from the
shrimp boats, now making unsuspecting dogs part of the
environmental shrimping disaster. If you have a pet the
following will be of interest.
PUFFER FISH POISONING
Poisoning with the neurotoxin tetrodotoxin (TTX) occurs
after ingestion of various species of puffer fish. Toxicity
varies amongst species, one article stating the poison is
1200 times more toxic than cyanide and the second strongest
poison known.
The flesh of the puffer fish (ie, fugu) is considered a
delicacy in Japan. It is prepared by chefs specially trained
and certified by the government to prepare the flesh free of
the toxic liver, gonads, and skin. Despite these
precautions, many cases of tetrodotoxin poisoning are
reported each year in patients ingesting fugu.
Tetrodotoxin also is found in the gastropod mollusc; in
the eggs of horseshoe crabs; in newts of the genus Taricha;
in the skin of Atelopid frogs; and in the skin and viscera
of porcupine fish, globefish, balloon fish, blowfish,
sunfish, toadfish, blue-ringed octopus, and some species of
salamanders.
The first symptoms occur 15 minutes to several hours
postingestion of tetrodotoxin-containing food. A recent
report on toxicity found that initial symptoms may occur up
to 20 hours after ingestion.
Initial symptoms include lip and tongue paresthesias,
followed by facial and extremity paresthesias and numbness.
Salivation, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea with abdominal
pain develop early.
Motor dysfunction with weakness, hypoventilation (may be
from dysfunction of central and peripheral nervous systems),
and speech difficulties then develop. A rapid ascending
paralysis occurs over 4-24 hours. Extremity paralysis
precedes bulbar paralysis, which is followed by respiratory
muscle paralysis. Deep tendon reflexes are preserved early
in the course of paralysis.
Finally, cardiac dysfunction with hypotension and
dysrhythmias (bradycardia), central nervous system (CNS)
dysfunction (eg, coma), and seizures develop. Patients with
severe toxicity may have deep coma, fixed nonreactive
pupils, apnea, and loss of all brain stem reflexes.
Death can occur within 4-6 hours. Typically, death occurs
from respiratory muscle paralysis and respiratory failure.

It is most prudent therefore to keep your pets close by
and closely observed whether near the beach or in the
desert. A local states that the farmers use the livers of
pufferfish as a cheap poison for pest control.
The La Paz veterinarian that was tremendously helpful
in dealing with the most recent case was Gabriel Mesa Leon.
His clinic "Dogtor House" is a well equipped, full service
clinic and located on Ignacio Ramirez between the 16 de

best..Magic Jack or Vonage. I know Magic Jack is less
expensive and if you have a U.S. # and are calling form it
to other U.S. phones...it should be pretty cheap. We have
the TelMex DSL signal for DSL, so we get Skype, pretty
good...most of the time. Skype is getting too expensive and
we are looking at the other two but wanted to know if anyone
is using either over the DSL from TelMex and how's it going?

Charlie's Chocolates wants to make your Valentine's Day

is celebrating Valentines’ Day or “Dia de la Amistad” with a Fair:
“The
Love and Friendship Fair” sponsored by the Delegacion and the Narciso
Mendoza Primary School. There will be food, rides, sporting events, a
dance, crowning of the Queen, "Mil Corazones y un solo fin" walk/run,
and an afternoon Valentines’ Day celebration. This is the first ever!
The theme is: "Your best friend is...your Heart," or “Keeping our Hearts
healthy through exercise.” So, most of the events center around physical
activities.
Friday:
5:00 pm: Inauguration of
the “Love and Friendship Fair” in the Cancha followed by
Men's Volleyball
Saturday:
8:00 am: “Mil
Corazones y un Solo Fin” Participants will walk/run from Buenos Aires
(alternative starting points are Ochoa's Chicken, and
Otra Vez) to the Cancha.
11:00 am: Kid’s
soccer at the soccer field,
4:00 pm:
Women’s Volleyball, and
10:00 pm:
Dance at the Cancha.
Sunday:
10:00
am: Bicycle race at the soccer field,
11:00
am Baseball and/or Soccer for the Secondary students, 5:00 pm Fitness
Marathon (step, zumba, aerobics) and
6:00 pm: Crowning of the “Queen of the Valentine’s Fair,” finally,
Monday (Valentines’ Day):
6:00 pm: an evening closing celebration.
(There are signs with the scheduled events posted
on the Primary School gates)
This event is exciting because it raises health
awareness. Register for the Walk/Run either with the Primary School
teachers, at the DIF office, or at the Library. Cost is 20 pesos and
includes a bottle of water. Money earned will be used for supplies etc for
the school. …So, start stretching and get out your running shoes for a
different kind of Heart Celebration...

is coming up. Most everyone loves receiving
flowers from their lover, friends or family
members.

Palmas Valentine's Day Update: We will be
having a classic car / off road display out in
front on the lobby. Any one wishing to display
their car / truck / small Jeep can arrive after
1 pm and park. . Palmas has invited those to use
the Pool and Hot tub for the afternoon. You will
need to show your dinner ticket. There will be
no judging.
Candle light dinner with soft romantic
music will be served in Tico’s waterfront
restaurant at 6:30 pm; Dancing will start at
7:30 to 9 pm.
Dance contest will start at 9pm with
registration starting at 7:30. Those not
wishing to dance, there will be 2 free pool
tables, and hot tub and swimming pool at your
disposal.
Tickets for the dinner are $15 and are for sale
at Palmas front desk, Roadrunner Café, and by me

I am able to buy surplus teaching aids and
medical equipment from University Nevada Reno.
These items are in need of work. I do all the
refurbishing at my shop in Tahoe and bring them
down to LB for the community. The money
generated from Dance Night & the Valentines
party will go to offset my costs for this year’s
items as well as next year’s items. You can see
these items by coming to dance Night. They have
been on display all winter. These items will be
presented to the schools and the clinic after
Feb 14th. I work thru the parent / teacher
league to be sure the items go to the right
place and to collect a list if things that are
needed next year.
