The largest and smallest planets, Jupiter and Mercury are on
view. If there is no cloud cover over the western mountains
about an hour after sunset for the next week (between
6:50-7:20 pm), look for tiny Mercury two or so finger
widths above giant Jupiter, near where the sun sets. Last
Thursday, after a roundabout journey of 6.5 years, 15
billion miles and two flybys, the spacecraft MESSENGER
finally went into orbit around Mercury. Mercury will now
begin to move back towards the sun and in a few weeks will
no longer be visible.
