The recent power outage and brown-out resurrected an
all too frequent problem in Mexico. I just happened to
right by my backup power supply when the recent event
happened. We had several rapid power outs and returns
followed by a long period of 30 volts. None of those events
are healthy for electronics especially your power supplies.
The spikes and brown outs affect not only computers but
also any type of transformer plugged directly into a wall
outlet. If you have a tower computer, the power supply may
survive but the hard drive can be in just as much danger.
If the read arm is in motion at the time of the failure,
data can be thrown across the spinning disk. That's really
hard for the average user to recover. If you have a laptop
with a good battery, the danger there is to the power supply
(the brick plugged into the wall). I highly recommend a UPS
(not the shipping company) which is a generic term for
Uninterrupted Power Supply. That's a gizmo with a built in
battery that will switch to it for power during a brown out
or surge. I use the Tripp-Lite model with the digital
voltage read out. That allows me to see the actual voltage.
If it's a brown out, I can unplug refrigerators or other
electric motors that need protection. Okay, I'm a little
paranoid - I have at least 8 of these backup units. I
back-up the TV, Stereo, Dish Receiver, DSL modem, cordless
phones, etc. Those standard power strips, surge protectors
and voltage regulators are of little help down here. When
you do plug your valuables into the UPS, remember to make
sure that you are connecting to the Battery Back-up side!!!
Half of the receptacles are surge only.
Take time to look at your documents and photos on your
hard drive. If you haven't backed them up, it may be that
last time you see them when we have the next power surge.

The Festival de Artes has received some great donations for
our raffle……..but, we could use a few more. Those
businesses that donate will get a plug from our Master of
Ceremonies on the day of the event. Which makes for some
really great advertisement for your business. We will look

ELIMINATE ANTHILLS SAFELY. Have a problem with anthills in
your yard. Paid a fortune for ant killer from a home
improvement store, but it failed miserably? Discover a
cheaper, safer alternative. Mix one cup of pine cleaner with
about a gallon of water, and pour it around and over the
anthill. The effect is almost immediate. No dangerous
pesticides.
QUESTIONS
a. ANIMAL CERTIFICATES:
(1) In response to a post saying that for bringing animals
into Mexico, as of January, 2011, we now need not only the
Health Certificate and proof of rabies vaccination but also
‘a certificate to ensure the animal is free of internal and
external parasites’. This has been a requirement for a
while and we simply had the vet add a statement to the
Health Certificate to state this. Can anyone tell us if
this is a new certificate requirement of if we can continue
to add this to the Health Certificate? Mary Fedorka,
mary@fedorka.com.
(2) Regardinbg all the new regulations regarding dogs
entering Mexico with three different documations, is there
anything about driving in and out of MExico with dogs? Any
info would be appreciated thanks s lloyd holashirleylapaz@gmail.com
