Thank you to Baja Shakespeare for giving the East Cape Guild
the opportunity to hold a 50/50 raffle. Thanks to all those
in the audience who bought tickets and a great big thanks to
the winner, Dick Rudolph from Todos Santos, who donated his
winnings back to the Guild. This is one of the fundraisers
that will help the Guild to award scholarships to local high
school kids who work hard and get very good grades. This
enables these students to stay in high school even if their
parents cannot afford the tuition and transportation.

I just got word from Maggy that her fish market behind
Faylas has opened again. Maggy says that she has fresh
fish, shrimp, and scallops. If it is anything like it has
been in the past, she will have good quality seafood at
reasonable prices. Turn between Faylas grocery store and
Freddies tire shop and go straight up the hill about 2
blocks. You will see her shop on the right near the top of
the hill.

As previously reported there have been fatalities in dogs
this season in the El Sargento / La Ventana area. It was
suspected that the dogs had ingested a poisonous substance.
Based on presenting signs and the progression of those
signs a substance called tetrodotoxin which is commonly
found in puffer fish was suggested. The problem was that no
one had seen their dog chewing on a puffer fish. A new event
has now occurred in the last 48 hours which seems to
elucidate the problem more clearly. A group of 6 young dogs
were taken to the beach around 7:00 AM. The person that was
with them observed them chewing on dead sea slugs that had
washed up on the beach recently following several days of
high wind and waves. The slugs were taken away from the
dogs, their mouths rinsed with sea water and all the dogs
were removed from the beach. Approximately 3 hours later all
the dogs but one were showing signs of toxicity(salivation,
vomiting, diarrhea, intense abdominal pain). All the dogs
were taken to a veterinarian in La Paz. At this time 4 of
the dogs have died, one is still being treated and one
showed only very mild signs and is doing well.
An internet search reveals that sea slugs can sometimes have
very high levels of tetrodotoxin in their skin (the same
toxin is present in puffer fish and a number of other marine
animals) and there are known cases of fatality in dogs from
sea slug exposure in other parts of the world.
The toxin is very potent that even small amounts can be
fatal. Dogs should not be allowed to chew on any marine
animals on the beach.

I will be showing my new Exvoto Paintings at the Arts Festival
in Los Barriles on April 3rd.
This Mexican Folk Art is a tradition of giving thanks to
someone (usually a Saint) for a miracle (milagro).
My theme this year is animals! For example, the Rooster tells
the hen they must give thanks to the Virgin of Guadalupe for the
miracle that the farmer is a vegetarian. This painting is sold but

what the cow, the dove, the whale and the goat have to be thankful
for!
I will also be showing my small watercolours and some paintings by
Jeff Heintzman.

Palmas. Yes there will be fresh cinnamon rolls, coffee and fruit
available to you while you set up between 8-10 am. Don't miss this
by forgetting to "spring forward" the night before! We certainly
look forward to seeing all that you have created.
Posted 3/26/11: Time to start looking forward to some very special
food choices this year at the Festival de Artes starting at 10am
Sunday April 3rd in the wonderful grassy area in front of Palmas. In
the BBQ section you will be able to choose between HANDCRAFTED
hamburgers and cheese on a freshly baked bun from the Roadrunner
Bakery or a perfectly
grilled quarter pound polish dog with every condiment you can
imagine!
You will also be able to enjoy tacos al pastor or carne asada with
all of the traditional salsas and garnishments.
Please don't miss our snack food area with fruit flavored paletas or
ice cream on a stick, traditional sliced fruit in a cup with chili
powder salt and lime, and last but not least tostilocos....now just
google it and please give it a try!
Yes you will definitely find a shaded place to eat along with water,
soft drinks, beer and alcoholic beverages to suit every one's taste.
Come and plan to spend the day since admission is free and parking
is abundant.
The Festival de Artes has received some great donations for our
raffle……..but, we could use a few more. Those businesses that donate
will get a plug from our Master of Ceremonies, Cheryl Dondlinger on
