As a result of the latest series of power fluxes and spikes, I lost a hard drive.  Yes,I took my own advice and it was plugged into one of my fancy UPS (Uninterrupted Power Supply) that is driven by it's own internal battery.  The problem was the internal battery indicated healthy but in reality the internal battery was dead.  When the power fluxed, so did the hard drive in my Dish DVR VIP 722(digital video recorder).  The solution is to test the backup system once or twice a year to make sure that it not only indicates healthy buy also works in the real world.  Now I hook-up a light to the back of the backup system, unplug the backup system from the wall and make sure that the light stays illuminated.  Replacement batteries can be purchased at Radio Shack in La Paz and I suspect Steren as well.  The replacement batteries are cheaper here than in the US.  Now I have to watch commercials!!!!
If you have a laptop with a failed internal battery and that laptop is running when a power outage occurs, your hard drive may be in danger as well.  Any time a hard drive looses power during operation, you stand a chance of failure.  The read head can sling data across the platter.  There are programs to restore but they are expensive and not very user friendly.
Remember one copy of your photos is not a backup.  You need two copies to qualify.  That just got easier a couple of days ago.  Amazon is offering 5 gigs of free storage.  www.amazon.com/clouddrive.  Follow the simple instructions and you can backup lots of stuff for free.  If you buy one album of music from them, you get 20 gigs of storage.  Storage is located at their secure S3 site - their commercial storage facility.  It is https compliant which means, it is bullet proof.  I'm uploading my documents as we speak (you read).

Well it was a huge success as anticipated our latest Dinner-Show event and I would like to thank all who participated and especially all those that purchased dinner tickets as we now hope during Easter vacation to put tile floors in the restrooms of the school along with new sinks and redo some stairs that are deteriorated and too small. You have made this possible and we would like to thank you again plus remember to look forward to next year’s event. Muchas Gracias y hasta luego!

I need a few more story tellers for "True 'Baja' Stories" night at Caleb's April 14th. Stories should be personal, true, written and 6-8 minutes long when read aloud. We will practise on April 13th. I know you have some good stories. So, get off those bar stools and get to your computers and WRITE THEM DOWN! I look forward to reading them. bajacamilla@yahoo.com

It's happening again. today i fueled up my diesel at the Pemex on the south end of Los Barriles (next to the nursery). I paid in advance $300 pesos. The second i turned on the pump it registered $46.00 pesos, even before i began pumping. I told the attendant and he said no that was impossible - and of course the pump stopped at $300 pesos, so i wad robbed of $46 pesos. Just an FYI - perhaps insist that the attendant pump for you and keep an eye on the gauge.
Keep a keen eye open - i was hoodwinked.

ROAD REPORTS

a.  We crossed the border at Tecate on Thursday. It was about noon and only 6 or 8 cars in line ahead of us and two stations open, so a very brief time in line and gone. Probably less than 20 minutes. Some construction between Ensenada and Tecate, but detours were on new pavement, twice with pilot cars.  6 military checkpoints, but only 3 inspections. The Pemex station just north of the monument at Gro Negro was closed, but we were able to get gas at Jesus Maria about 20 miles north. So if you plan to gas up in that vicinity there are 2 stations at Viscaino. Thankfully no stops by any police officers!! Patti & Jene Winn

FISHING UPDATES - Finally, a place for our locals to brag and keep us informed!

a.  Answer to my fish question
:  Your readers may not understand about ‘fishing’.  We don’t often have periods like the one we are having now when the joy of ‘fishing’ can be experienced without being contaminated by the actual ‘catching’ of fish.  But the water is beginning to warm up and soon we will experience long periods of ‘catching’.  In the mean time, try to be patient.  Soon, there will be more than enough greatly exaggerated reports of huge and numerous fish.  And I, myself, will contribute my share.  Torrance Eddy

Exvotes(Retablos)and other Paintings

SEDDON WYLDE
I will be showing my new Exvoto Paintings at the Arts Festival
in Los Barriles on April 3rd.
This Mexican Folk Art is a tradition of giving thanks to
someone (usually a Saint) for a miracle (milagro).
My theme this year is animals! For example, the Rooster tells
the hen they must give thanks to the Virgin of Guadalupe for the
miracle that the farmer is a vegetarian. This painting is sold but come see
what the cow, the dove, the whale and the goat have to be thankful for!
I will also be showing my small watercolours and some paintings by Jeff Heintzman.
