COURTESY OF THE VENTANA VIEW - Our neighbors to the north
Naufragos - rescue at Cerralvo via the VentanaView -
Our neighbors to the north
On our trips to Cerralvo diving and fishing we see new
things every time - sperm whales, orcas, turtles, mantas,
oarfish..you never know what the ocean will serve up. Today we
found naufragos - castaways adrift -- 3 men ages 40, 15 and 16 were
drifting with a heavy current 1/4 mile off the north end of Cerralvo
in an 8 foot dinghy - yep 3 men in an 8 foot dinghy - drifting past
Cerralvo on their way to Mazatlan - no shirts, no water no food and
2 broken halves of a kayak paddle for propulsion. They had been in
the ocean drifting for 2 days and one night and were trying to make
landfall at Pta Norte but could not break the current and were
heading to open water. We had seen both a helicopter and plane
flying very low over us while we were making bait early in the
morning but hadn't thought much about it.
The 3 men were camping with their family at a beach
just north of Las Cruces when they decided to row out to a rock 200
meters offshore to handline for trigger fish for a couple hours --
the wind was from the west and picked up quickly blowing them
offshore - They said they paddled as hard as they could to break the
wind and current for 4 hours and then finally gave up exhausted to
drift through the rest of the day and night -no anchor, supplies,
nothing...They said they tried to wave down various pangas the next
day but no one could see them--The west wind was very strong all day
the day we found them and they said they had been very scared that
the closely spaced chop was going to tip their little boat over and
they had to be very careful how they moved. We called the Capitania
de Puerto in La Paz via telephone and VHF 16 and they dispatched two
Navy 28 foot rigid hull semi inflatable rescue crafts from La Paz
each with triple merc 250's on them - we put the naufragos in our
boat, gave them water, food, and a cold pacifico to the adult, and
towed their little craft down the backside of the island to head
back to Palapas Ventana and hide from the west wind - at Pta Sur we
were met by the rescue boats and transferred them on board and waved
goodbye as they sped off to La Paz and took their 8 foot floating
home in tow. There's a lot of water out there.

New treatment for scorpion stings
The Food and Drug Administration has approved the first treatment
especially for the Centruroides scorpion- the nasty critter from the
southwest.
The new treatment - called Anascorp- was fast-tracked
because there simply wasn't adequate treatment available before its
arrival. According to Karen Midthun, M.D. in charge of the FDA's
Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, Anascorp provides "a
new treatment for children and adults, designed specifically for
scorpion stings." In infants and children, Dr. Midthun says,
"scorpion stings can be fatal."
Severe stings can trigger loss of muscle control,
convulsions, and breathing difficulties that had previously required
deep sedation and intensive hospital care. It was tested, fittingly,
in Arizona in 2004 and found to be effective in treating the stings
of the bark scorpion. Also known as the Arizona bark scorpion, it's
the most poisonous scorpion in the U.S.
The results were certainly encouraging. Children with
extreme reactions normally faced lengthy stays in intensive care.
When treated with Anascorp, researchers found patient symptoms
disappeared after a few hours in the emergency room, no hospital
stay required.
The best way to minimize the chances of getting stung
is to know where to be on the alert for scorpions. They're attracted
to dark, moist places. That means you should be careful around
rocks, wood, loose tree barks, or other stuff laying on the ground
that could provide a cool, moist hideout. Landscapers are
particularly at risk for scorpions, along with hornets, bumblebees,
snakes and most of the other nasties of summer.
If you're unlucky enough to have an unfortunate
encounter with one, here are some simple things you can do: clean
the site with soap and water, apply a cool compress, elevate the
affected limb to the same level as your heart, and take aspirin or
acetaminophen as needed for mild discomfort.
As with any sting, be especially aware of any sort of
breathing difficulty. If there's any question about breathing, don't
risk it - head to a medical facility immediately.

ROAD
REPORT
We left LB 6 am Wed. Aug. 3rd. Heading home to Ca. I
have to say in 25 years it was the worst trip we've ever had. The
road conditions and construction were horrible, hot and long. The
first day our goal is to go to Gurerro Negro we usually get there
between 4pm- ish. We didn't get there til 7:30 pm. at Don Gus.
Between Insurgentes and the Loretto grade the road is torn up grava
suelta both sides. We were stopped it was down to 1 lane. Then
near the bottom of the grade and before Napolo it was the same.
Then in the Bay of Conception it was torn up again.
The next morning Thurs. Aug. 4th, we left Don Gus
at 5:30 am. Outside of Villa Jesus Maria road construction both no.
and so. all dirt and giant pot holes for miles. Then from the Bay
of LA to Catavina really rough and torn up road no. and so. for
miles and miles and miles. Then out of San Quintin before Santo
Tomas road torn up both sides and 1 lane we were stopped for a long
time then I counted 46 vehicles pass us as we were held up this went
on for 30-40 miles. Then after Santo Tomas more torn up road and
just when we thought it was over it continued for miles and miles.
We cross the border at Tecate as it is a nicer drive and dont have
to sit at TJ for hours in line. We expected to cross at 3pm. Buuuuuttttt....More
and more torn up road and grava suelta on the Tecate highway 3.
finally crossed the border at 6:30 after being searched in
secondary for half an hr. We were so happy to be in the U.S. by
then it didn't matter anymore. So our 21 hr trip took 26 hrs.
But the funny thing was we live in Norco a small horse
town in Riverside County, we were about a couple miles from the turn
off and home and I said "At least we have no more grava suelta" but
low and behold when we got off the freeway on 2nd street in Norco,
it was all torn up with grava suelta. We were so punchy and tired
by then we just burst into laughter. Can you believe it???
Well thats my story and I'm stickin to it!!! Smile.
Good luck to all goin in or out. Kathy and
Jim Poe
