Note: I
want to do something fun this summer and have a section
called "Photo of the Day"
This will include "amazing" sea life photos (and I mean
amazing not just the old hanging dead fish on a hook),
photos of our area that are 15 years or older, fun parties
from 20+ years ago. Please include a description and
who took the pic. For today's funny photo, go to the
end of this BPE. (Oh, and do ask permission, please

INTERNET HACKING
a. My Hotmail account was hacked last week and
now I don't have access to it. So all my contacts were
lost. VERY frustrating. If you know me I sure would
appreciate a note so I can add your name to my contacts.

(I received an email from Pat and this is really serious
about her Hotmail account. Below is an excerpt: "Everyone
on my contact list got an email saying I was in Wales and
had been mugged. If you responded then they asked for
money. They had all my emails forwarded to them so it
looked like the answer was coming from me. They changed the
password and Microsoft (Hotmail) won't let me back on even
though I gave them all sorts of identifying info. I had
some very sensitive financial info on there so have had to
hire an "Identity Guard" company to monitor my credit
report. I not only lost personal email info but
business stuff. Not fun.)

c. It has happened to me, too, Cheryl. It is usually
caused by someone getting ahold of your email address
password and the solution is usually as simple a changing of
that password. If the victim wants to go further, they can
close that email account and open a new one with all new
email address and new password.
d. Sadly, the hackers are persistent and innovative. Most
of them nowadays are getting access to private info through
FaceBook. Setting the privacy parameters there is a major
blockage for you.
Also, other people who you communicate with
may have their areas compromised by leaving private
information accessible to hackers, and then can also find
your address. It's not OK anymore to give out your EMail
address to just anyone.
I have several Email addresses to combat
the hackers. One is just for personal use and doesn't get
released unless I know that person. You can set up others
less private, using say - Gmail and then when you get a
funny response to the GMail address, you know that it's a
hacker, and you can set up an automatic filter to weed out
the culprits.
The best way to get "cleaned up" is to get
a new EMail address for your personal and private mail, and
then use the old compromised address as your more "public"
Email address. That way, you always have a secure address.
e I wanted to send this reply in regards to the request
for more information on how email accounts get hacked.
The majority of the time a hacker gains access to an email
account by a method called "Phishing". It is called this
because the hacker will create a fake site or webpage(the
bait) and then send messages to potential victims via Email,
Instant Messages, Facebook, etc; asking them to login to the
seemingly legitimate site, hoping that someone will "bite".
The fake sites will look like an email page, banking site,
Social Networking, Auction site, and so on. Once a victim
attempts to login, any details they enter are provided to
the "Hacker". Phishing scams are not generally targeting a
specific person, but are sent out to thousands(or millions)
of people in the hopes that a few will hand over their
details.

f. Being from LA and working in marketing, I've been
getting those emails for as long as I can remember - at
least ten years!!!! The relative is the most common but
there are lottery winning notifications from Mumbai or the
UK (Those seem to be the most popular..:-), an inheritance
to be claimed from a long lost dead uncle living in Zimbabwe
(or somewhere in Africa, and all sorts of different prizes -
Mercedes, Range Rovers, Etc. that need to be claimed.
They all want ONE THING - your bank account
routing numbers!! It's the same scam as someone offering to
buy an item from you, sending a cashier's check for the
amount PLUS a shipping fee and getting you to send the item.
The cashier's check is voided and you're out the $$$ and
the item.
Try and remember one simple motto - if it
sounds too good to be true - DO NOT OPEN THAT EMAIL!!
Sometimes it's a virus and other times it's looking for
information. Either way, send it to spam or just hit that
DELETE key!!
