BAJA DOGS, LA PAZ
UPDATE ON ELI!
Our "Eli", the staff at the refuge, all
volunteers and the Board of Directors of Baja
Dogs and myself (Shawn, a very grateful refuge
volunteer who cuddles Eli all I can) wish to
express our sincere thanks to all those good
hearted souls who have provided Eli with a
chance to live. We reached out to you in
desperation and I can't possibly express in
words how overwhelmed we have been with your
response. Thank You, from the bottom of our
hearts!
Eli has started an antibiotic "Doxycycline"
treatment. She receives 500mg once a day for 30
days prior to heartworm treatment. This
pre-treatment is the first step and will not be
completed for another 2 weeks. This treatment
kills an organism (like bacteria) which lives
inside the adult heartworm called Wolbachia and
seems to sterilize the female heartworm. This
treatment is also beneficial in reducing the
embolism and shock to Eli that could result when
the heartworms die.
We have requested quotes for Eli's
treatment from three local
veteranerians. We are currently in
the process of reviewing and
identifying the best treatment for
Eli in the most cost effective
method.
Right now, Eli is a happy beautiful dog. She appears strong and healthy and we are hoping for the best. We will continue to share with you each month her progress through this disease. Sincerely, Shawn, Baja Dogs Volunteer
