So what’s an IPad??? The IPad is basically a “slate” type computer with a touch sensitive screen.  I can accomplish 90% of my computing requirements with the IPad.  There are two IPad versions, the older version one and the newer version two (wow!!!).  Version 2 has a front and rear facing camera, a faster internal processor, along with some other really geekie stuff.  I have a version one and have no desire nor need to upgrade.  There are two models of each IPad version.  There is the Wi-Fi only model that is the lowest entry level unit, the Wi-Fi 3G model allows you to access internet data through the mobile cell phone networks in the US!!!  The 3G model also has a built-in GPS data receiver.  I have the 3G model since we spend a lot of time on the go.  Once you have selected the model then the next option is “How much storage (memory) do you need?”  I have the lowest level of memory.  I don’t plan to store a lot of photos, music or videos.  My wife has 3000 photos, four movies, and music with lots of storage remaining.
To activate the IPad, you must have or create a free ITunes account.  After that, you don’t need to connect it to a computer but that does help with operating system updates, automatic application backup, transfer of photos, music and videos.
The Wi-Fi 3G model does not require a contract with AT&T for internet service.  You can sign up for month to month for $25 per month.  That will provide you with mobile internet but remember it’s not a cell phone.  It does have Skype for VOIP calls and video conferences but Skype is optimized for Wi-Fi connections.  As of now, Verizon does not have the internal cell data capability for the IPad.
The IPad allows me through its “Apps” to:  listen to music that I preloaded, listen to music on the internet, watch Netflix in the US, display our travel photo collection, play a few video games (angry birds of course).  Oh yes, I can check my email, surf the web, navigate on land or in the air.  The calendar (using Google’s Calendar) will sync calendar events with all my computers and both IPads.  The “Planet” App tells me the names of all the stars/planets within my horizon.  I can book travel, check currency exchange rates and track the flights.  I can check all my banks and investments.  95% of the Apps I have are free.  The IPad is now my travel computer.

ROAD REPORTS

a.  Just thought we'd report on our accommodations and drive heading north.
Hi folks, in response to requests I'm reporting on our hotels and route heading north.  In the interests of time we chose the following:  Baja Cactus in El Rosario.  Great stone work, comfortable, clean, but no Wifi in the room as advertised because it was too far from the main desk.  In Mulege, we stayed at Serenidad.  What looked like it once was a pretty good place is now dirty, in ill repair, with marginal food.  Don't stay there because there are other options now. Also, In Santa Rosalia we ate an early breakfast in the Hotel Morro (the only place open) where, if you speak Spanish you'll get a decent meal; if not, it will be like pulling teeth.  We took route 3 to Tecate which is a beautiful drive  through their wine country with a short bit of construction.  15 minutes at the border mid-day.  Jennifer  alighton@me.com

QUESTIONS

a.  I hike in the hills, especially the bike trails that go out from the Monumento a la Bandera and from Ramal El Coro and Puente Palmilla and Pemex Trail. I have never seen any snakes, and wonder if anyone has encountered rattlers on the trails in the hills. I was out with my greyhound Scrabble on the trail from Ramal El Coro to the Monument on May 8 (Mother's Day), and Scrabble collapsed and died on the trail. A neighbor thought it might have been a snake bite, but who knows?? Now I am worried about snakes. If you have seen rattlers, what time of day? Any suggestions about what to do if I encounter a rattler? Gracias! Clair <clairbrown@gmail.com>
