ARMANDO UPDATE - Received 8/16/12
Armando was released from the hospital last weekend, and spent the
week at Dona Carmen's home in La Paz. He is bed ridden until is arms
have healed enough to support his weight. He has titanium plates and
screws on all four appendages holding the broken bones in
place...Right upper arm and shoulder, left lower arm and wrist, left
knee and lower leg, and right lower leg. All covered with various
types of splints and casts. I had talked to him and Paulie several
times over the last few weeks, but I was not prepared for the true
severity of his injuries when we arrived last Monday at Paulie's
mothers home. He also suffered second degree chemical burns from his
left upper back, down under his armpit and flank and back to his
buttocks from the high octane racing fuel that seeped into his
racing suit when the gas tank ruptured. (Ironically, Don was in the
US picking up a new FuelSafe gas tank for him when the accident
happened.) The burns were quite extensive and had to be debrided
daily... removing damaged tissue and skin with tweezers and
scissors...an excruciatingly painful procedure. They have healed
beautifully without any infection.
Alex, his nephew, is recovering slowly. He still had the pneumo-Vac
attached to his left knee. He is heavily medicated and still had
some swelling/bruising in his brain.
Armando is in a hospital bed with a pneumatic mattress that cycles
different air pressures that stimulates circulation and prevents
pressure ulcers. He will be in bed for a few weeks. The plan is for
him to return to Barriles this weekend by ambulance. He will need
lots of rehab and I believe his ortho physician has given him a list
of instructions and exercises. When his arms heal enough to support
him getting up, then he can move to the wheel chair.
Once again, Paulie and Armando are grateful for all the good wishes
and prayers sent their way. They are overwhelmed by all the
community support they have received.
