The Consul General from the U.S.
Consulate in Tijuana, Andrew SE Erickson, will be in Los
Cabos on Wednesday, December 12th. He will be
speaking at a Town Hall meeting for American citizens at the
Hilton Hotel at 3:00 pm that
afternoon. He is interested in hearing the concerns of the
American community and, although he will be unable to answer
passport or visa questions, Consular Agency staff will be on
hand to respond to these and other inquiries attendees may
have. Mr. Erickson will be unable to answer questions from
the press. The Hilton is located on the Carretera
Transpeninsular Km 19.5, between San Jose del Cabo and
Cabo San Lucas. We hope to see you there!

Last April Telmex dropped my
internet connection from 4 megs to 2 megs without any
notification. My bill was almost 1000 pesos a month for the
4 meg service that worked well for several years. My new
bill for the 2 meg service was now almost 600 pesos. In six
months I discovered that a 2 meg service is supposed to be
almost 300 pesos monthly. So for six months they took
approximately 300 pesos from me unfairly. When I argued my
case with Telmex they told me they would only reimburse my
account for three months. I persisted for a very long time
and with repeated phone calls before they finally asked me
what I would settle for. I did the math and they agreed to
credit my account.
In addition they now claim they can not give me more
than a 2 meg service because of their server. And when I
asked for the 10 meg service they now offer they said they
could not provide it to me. However my new bill was for the
10 meg service. Ken E

BAJA NIGHT SKIES December 2012
-- International Space Station: Sunday evening,
December 9, the ISS will make a bright six-minute pass over
Baja Sur. The space station rises in the SW near Mars
around 6:11pm, crosses overhead through the Great Square of
Pegasus around 6:14:45pm, passes near the Andromeda Spiral
Galaxy about 6:15:20pm, and goes back into the earth's
shadow in the NE about 6:17pm. Stars: Several bright
stars rise in the SE during the evening: Betelguese and
Rigel in the constellation Orion around 7pm north of
southeast (NSE), Sirius, brightest star in the night sky, in
the SE around 8:30pm, and Canopus SSE around 10pm. Stars
are so far away that their image is just a point of light.
Atmospheric layers of different temperatures and densities,
acting like a prism, bend starlight by refraction into
different colors and paths that cause a star to "twinkle."
The three bright stars forming the large Summer Triangle
in the NW sky around 8pm are Deneb, Altair, and the
brightest, Vega. They leave the night sky soon after New
Year's. Planets: The planet Jupiter rises in
the E during early evening and is brighter than Sirius. It
is relative close to Earth and appears as a disk in a
telescope. Many points of light from its disk are refracted,
but tend to cancel each other out, so Jupiter and the other
planets do not twinkle as much as stars. Mars is
setting in the SW until around 7:15pm. It's worth getting up
before 6am to see Mercury, Venus, and Saturn
lined up in the eastern sky. Internet talk that this
alignment and the completion of a Mayan calendar cycle on
December 21 herald the end of the world has no basis in
fact. Meteor Shower: The Geminids, one of the best
showers of the year, peaks between 9pm Thursday, December
13, and dawn December 14. While other showers are produced
by grain-sized particles left by disintegrating comets and
never fall to earth as meteorites, Geminid meteors are
pieces from an asteroid and can produce fireballs that reach
the earth as meteorites. Peak hours after midnight often
produce as many as 100 meteors an hour. Tom S.

a. Scams at Pemex Gas Stations - We have
received a number of reports of scams run at various gasoline
stations in the Los Cabos area. These reports usually increase
around the holidays, and often revolve around the same themes;
tampered pumps not giving full measure, attendants not resetting
pumps to 0.00 or pretending to pump gas when they did not,
attendants working in teams to distract you with one offering to
wash your windows, short changing, claiming you gave a 20- or
50-peso note instead of a 200- or 500-peso note, etc.
Best advice is for you to order a specific amount of
gasoline, such as $300 pesos, verify the pump has been reset to 0,
pay using the exact amount in pesos you ordered, and don't lose
sight of the money you paid. Contact the authorities at PROFECO,
5568 8722 in Mexico City, or 01 800 468 8722,
www.profeco.gob.mx/english.htm,
denunciasgasolina@profeco.gob.mx, whenever you have a
complaint. Make a note of the station number, location, and
the name of the attendant(s) if you can get it. - The Baja Western

Greetings Pony Express folks!
I'm putting together a selection of work to show at the Colima del
