Courtesy of the VentanaView......Our neighbors to the north

a.   Baja Night Skies. Today, Feburary 29, is Leap Day. To keep the calendar in synch with the seasons, the extra day is added every 4 years except those you can divide evenly by 100 but not 400. On leap day 1504, Columbus was anchored in the West Indies while facing hostile Indians and diminishing food and water supplies. He used his knowledge of an impending eclipse of the moon that night to get needed supplies from the Indians. They laughed when he said the moon would be devoured after sunset. When it happened, they provided the supplies in return for bringing back the moon.
Venus, Jupiter and the waxing crecent moon continue to dominate the western sky after sunset and Mars and Saturn the eastern sky later in the evening. Information on the ISS's longest and brightest pass of the year on Sunday evening will be posted in Sunday's Ventana View.

b.  If you are heading north… I have been informed by Lloyd that blvd 2000 now has a toll booth exit there making it much easier to find and saving more time. So going north on hwy 1 from Ensenada you now exit at blvd 2000. This is a much easier way to get to either Otay Mesa or Tecate. If you need the details it is at the site www.la-ventana.info  and go to travel and by land and you will find the information for going to either Tecate or Otay Mesa. I highly recommend you calling a friend at home and have them look on the web at the current border crossing times at border. This way you decide on Tecate or Otay. I also have a link to that site under this same heading, by land. dean

a.       Flying From La Paz to Sacramento (or to Just About Anywhere in the US) - Volaris has recently added some new routes. If you can pick your dates based on cost, take a $163 US 1-stop flight on Volaris from La Paz to Las Vegas thru Guadalajara ( www.volaris.com.mx/en/  ), then take a $69 US nonstop flight on Southwest from Las Vegas to Sacramento ( www.southwest.com ). Total cost: about $232 US. Round trip tickets are at similar low prices. For many connections, this is better and cheaper than taking Volaris to Tijuana, then crossing the border and taking a taxi to the San Diego airport, because you don't have to leave the airports or cross the border on foot.
     Footnote: Watch out for Volaris' "Gotcha!" on their cheapest tickets. You can only check a single 15Kg bag (33 Lbs). Any more than that and you'll pay $10 US for each Kg over the limit. This cost me $80 US on my last trip, more than I would have paid had I purchased the more expensive ticket that allowed 25 Kg (55 Lbs). Volaris and Southwest have recently begun partnering, so the route between La Paz to Sacramento, and other Western cities, may get even easier in the near future. - Alan, alan@BajaSatellite.com,  Todos Santos

FISHING REPORTS - Local's fishing reports do NOT need to be signed.  Just tell the TRUTH!

a.  Reading this report proves the durability of the fishing areas I cover. Fishing below the border reminds me of a kid's "whack-a-mole." As one hot area goes cold another pops up somewhere else.
Our report will now be accessible at the following links;

d. It's that time of year again .... the Whales are back!
We have been organizing a number of trips to Puerto San Carlos (Magdalena Bay) and everyone is having a great time!
If you have never gone to see these incredible creatures up close and personal, you don't know what your missing. We had a group of 15 on Monday and EVERYONE got to touch the friendly whales mama's and their babies. Another group went up on Tuesday and saw more than 20 whales, had lunch on the Island with fresh fish and shrimp right on the beach and then enjoyed the amazing white dunes bird beach and sea lions.
     We have openings for almost any day that the weather is good. We have 5 boats available with bi-lingual captains. Each boat can take 6 persons and the cost is $300 pesos per person based on a full boat. Some of the commercial companies here in La Paz charge $120-$150 usd's per person for this trip.  Transportation is not included and you cannot bring pets on any of the boats due to governmental regulations.
     Taking reservations now for the coming week. If interested please email me with the dates desired and number of persons in your group. We can take groups as large as 30 people if needed.
There are more than 50 Whales in the Bay at the moment but they will be here for a few more weeks before they start their migration back North, so don't delay!
Please feel free to contact me with questions or additional information.
