FIDO FOUND:  Hi we found a small black and white dog. Looks like a Jack Russell Chihuahua mix. It wondered into our gathering at Martin Verdugo`s Hotel on New Year`s Eve around 10:00pm. Apparently it likes us a lot as she is still here. Likes ATV rides, warm showers (not so much), hanging around the pool, local bars and restaurants. Seems to be really easy going. No collar. We are from San Jose del Cabo and will be returning tomorrow, Jan 3, 2011. We will try and leave her with ALMA. For info call me at cell 624.147.9702 or email me at adrianthompson@shaw.ca

For the Baja Pony Express. Baja Skies for Wednesday, January 4. Wednesday there will be a meteor
shower, a flare, a 4 1/2 minute pass of the International Space Station, several planets and two of the
brightest stars to view, and two constellations that cannot be seen from more northern latitudes. The
Quadrantids, often the best meteor shower of the year, occurs early Wednesday morning. It's named
after a constellation that is no longer recognized, so the radiant of this shower is near the constellation
Bootes, a constellation in the northeast sky, rising over Cerralvo around 1am, Wednesday morning. The
brightest star in the region, Arcturus, is part of the constellation. And the meteor shower radiant is just
west of Arcturus, under the handle of the big dipper at that hour. If you follow that arc of the big
dipper's handle it points across the sky to Arcturus. You may see a few meteors by 1am, but the bright
gibbous moon will still be up and the radiant may still be below the horizon. The best time is probably
after the moon sets at 3am, and some sources say best viewing will be between 5am and 6am, when the
radiant is highest in the northern sky, directly below Arcturus. This is one of the most active and
brightest showers of the year. However, its maximum only lasts a few hours and sometimes ends before
it reaches viewers on the west coast. But it might be worth getting up around 5am to check it out. At 5
am there is a chance the Southern Cross will be high enough to poke its top and crossbar above the
mountains directly to the south. Scorpius, with the bright red giant star Antares at the heart of the
scorpion, along with its head and pincers, will just be rising in the southeast at 5am The tail and stinger
will be below the horizon. There will be a satellite flare at 5:37:18 am, low in the southeast sky, about
15 degrees to the east of due south. On thursday morning there will be a much brighter flare in the
same placee at 5:31:32 am in the Los Barriles area. At the same hour, Mars will be overhead and Saturn
high in the eastern sky. Sunrise is at 7:04 and sunset at 5:46 pm (a little earlier here because of the
mountains in the west). To top it all off, the International Space Station will make one of its brightest
passes of the year, almost as bright as the evening star Venus. It's a 4 1/2 minute trip. The ISS will rise
from behind the mountains in the northwest around 7:04 pm. If you miss it there, it will be almost
overhead in the southwest by 7:06:43 pm and will continue towards the southeast where it will
disappear about 30 degrees above the horizon at 7:08:05 pm. Unlike some sports, it's best to be sober
when stargazing. You need your watches set to the second or use a smartphone clock. Now let's hope
for clear skies. Tom S.
