Note emails have not been sent out. I have lost all the addresses.
If you were getting, or want to start getting, the email showing
photos of local Baja birds please email
john@bajabirder.com
with bird notes in the subject line. Bird Notes is a (somewhat)
daily email that shows photos and provides a little background data
of our local East Cape birds.

SKY WATCH:
Baja Sky Watch for June, 2012. The big event for June
is the transit of Venus across the face of the sun on the afternoon
of Tuesday, June 5. The Ensenada Institute of Astronomy announced it
intends to set up telescopes for viewing the transit at Mission San
Jose Del Cabo, the site used to watch the 1769 transit by Spanish
and French astronomers. The transit will begin at approximately
4:06:30 pm and continue past sunset. Do not look at the sun without
certified eclipse glasses or #14 welding glass. Through eclipse
glasses, Venus will just be a dot crossing the face of the sun.
Earth would appear just as tiny in the vast solar system to an
observer on Mars. The event can be watched live on the internet at
www.slooh.com . For historical
information and more go to
www.transitofvenus.org . After passing to the west of the sun,
near the end of the month both Venus and Jupiter will appear in the
east before sunrise as the bright morning stars in the constellation
Taurus, with Venus sitting next to the bright star Aldebran.
There are three other sky events worth watching in
early June. Around 5am on Monday, June 4, the setting full moon will
be partially eclipsed by earth's shadow. On Monday's evening at
8:35:37pm in the Cabo San Lucas area, there will be a very bright
satellite flare high in the ESE (a little south of due east) sky and
lasting about 10 seconds.. You might be able to catch a slightly
dimmer view at other locations on the Eastcape, but begin viewing
half a minute earlier. Tuesday evening, after the transit of Venus,
the International Space Station will make a bright pass, rising in
the SW around 9:35pm, passing high overhead around 9:38pm, and
setting in the NE around 9:41, a six-minute trip. It will be the
brightest object in the night sky when overhead. In the Cabo San
Lucas area, the ISS will transit across Mars and the last star in
the handle of the Big Dipper.
All month long, Saturn and Mars will be high the the
south or southwestern sky by 9pm. Scorpio, with the red giant double
star Antares at its heart, will be rising in the southeast sky, and
the Southern Cross will be standing vertically just above the
southern horizon. The Big Dipper should be easy to spot in the
northern sky. If you follow the arc of the Dipper's handle across
the sky it will lead you to Arcturus, the 3rd brightest star in the
sky. Sliding past Arcturus will take you to the star Spica near
Saturn.

7Seas at Cabo Surf Hotel is about a 20 on the scale of 1-10. We had
dinner last night. Food was excellent, wine was excellent, service
was excellent, ambiance is more than excellent.
it is not the most convenient, but if you are looking for a special
outing, you will not be disappointed.
Prices aren't cheap, but not over the top either. Give this a
try. You will be glad you did.
ROAD REPORT
a.
Drove the route (with our truck and camper) on our return home and
thoroughly enjoyed it, although the 51 miles of rough unpaved road
(and I mean rough!) can be a bit tedious. It took us just over 4
hours to drive the section between Hwy 1 and where the new pavement
begins south of Puertecitos. Clearance is not an issue, it is just
potholes and rocks that make the going slow. Roughly 1.5 hrs to
Coco's Corner, another 1.45 hrs to Rancho Grande (Diesel and Gas
available) and then about another 45 mins. or so to the new pavement
south of Puertecitos. The new pavement to Puertecitos is probably
the best in Baja! From Puertecitos to San Felipe the pavement is OK
but there are dips you have to watch for that accommodate water
during run-off periods. San Felipe to Mexicali is good and quick.
Crossing at Mexicali took us about an hour.
We would definitely do this again, you just have to be
patient through the 51 miles of rough, slow going road. We lowered
our tire pressure to 45lbs. and that made it easier. Overall, a good
experience and beat going through all that traffic and congestion on
Mex 1 north of San Quentin. Just remember the 51 miles of unpaved
road is remote with little or no services so be prepared.
Please feel free to ask any questions and we will do
our best to answer. ghwm@shaw.ca
