     WE DID IT!! YOU DID IT!!! We ALL Did It!!!!! ------ Thanks to the many, many, MANY wonderful donations made by our community and also from as far as Todos Santos, Cabo, San Diego and San Jose - we have an 8 STATION COMPUTER LAB at the Elementary (Primaria) School in Los Barriles. Each station has dual Spanish-English software programs for children of all ages.
     This is HUGE!! We are now the ONLY community whose children have access to a computer lab beginning from first grade. We couldn't have done it without Cody from EAST CAPE TECHNICAL!! He tirelessly rebuilt computers when necessary and re-wired the elementary for wireless networks. Thank you CODY!!
     And - thank you everyone for giving from the heart. We'd love for you to stop by the elementary school anytime and see where all that generosity went. And...whenever you have any extra or used computer item - laptop, monitor, printer, etc - please don't forget that we can USE it!! Flying with Morris and Fido.  Hopefully, we'll start hearing good stories

      (1)There seems to be a lot of confusion on traveling with dogs into Mexico on board with all airlines landing in Mexico. I have just checked with WESTJET and the Canadian Mexican consulate. The rule that the Mexican government has in place is old and has never been enforced and it only pertains to flights within Mexico (ie: Cabo to Mexico City) not for international flights from Canada or the US into Mexico. Some airlines are taking precautions when booking dogs on board but Westjet is waiting for a official notice from the Mexican government if there are changes . Apparently this old information was leaked to the public and is causing a lot of panic. I would advise everyone traveling with dogs to call their airlines and make sure there is no problems.      (2)  I just called the 1-800-446- 3942 number to ask about the in -cabin rule and they had no information for me. They told me to call the airline direct. I had spoken to American and they said I would have to fly to somewhere in the states that had a flight to Mexico. So I would have to fly from Maine to CA. or AZ and pay $125 to bring my cat on board. Then I would have to make separate reservation from there to Cabo and pay $175 to put her in a hard case and fly her in the hold if it was not to hot. I cannot make a connecting flight and have her in the cabin part of the way and then check her in the hold. The airline said they would not fly her in the hold here in the states. If any one has information to help with this I would appreciate it. Anne 

So, I asked Anne, who is the 800 number?

Answer:  I actually got the number off the Pony. It was posted June 20th by Olivia. It said to call and complain about the policy. But the woman I spoke to at the tourism bureau did not know what I was referring to, She said to call the airline. We were going to make a direct flight on U.S. Air from Portland Maine to Cabo. They only fly pets in the cabin, so we would have to go to Phoenix and then go to another airline to fly the cat into Mexico. When I made the original reservation in March to fly home in May no one mentioned this. When we got to the airport Greg had to go out to buy a hard case. They had to change our flight from 2:00 to 5:00 so it was cooler in the hold. We were only going as far as LA so no big deal. We were flying back to Portland a few days later. American Airlines said the law had changed the day before. So instead of costing us $125 to bring her on board it cost $175 to put her in the hold. I called American and they said yes flying to Mexico she had to be in the hold. I could not make a direct flight since I had to check her in at the baggage desk and not at the gate. If I take her on board between here and either LA or Phoenix I will have to go back out through security and check her at the baggage on another flight. It is not an airline rule it seems to be a Mexican rule. It does cost more so I do not know if this is why. I will keep you informed as to what we do on our flight back in October. I have recommended NATIONAL RENT-A-CAR many times. It's one of the most economical ways to get from the airport to Los Barriles when you don't have a ride. I've rented the one-way car for 24 hours at around $50 many times and have been very happy with the cost and convenience. HOWEVER, I need to warn you about something that happened to me last trip. I just got a bill for $155 because they held me responsible for a crack in the front of the car. The crack was actually in the finish and looked to be a manufacturer's defect. Here's what happened...Of course, I was in a hurry to get on the road and out of the airport when I picked up the car. It always takes longer than it seems it should. When they did the walk around to check for damage before I left with the car, the man was writing as I was pointing out the dings in the car. He physically appeared to be marking on the page absolutely every time I pointed to something on the car. After we walked around the car and I assumed he was finished marking, I signed the sheet and was on my way. When I returned the car, there was NOT ONE MARK that he had documented as being on the car when I picked it up. I tried to argue with them because the car wasn't new and of course, would have had a few small scratches and the fact that NOTHING was documented indicated that he hadn't done his job. But, I signed it, yes, I did. AND I tipped him, TOO! UGH..I feel like an idiot. I wish I could say that because we love being here that we can trust people. But, it just isn't so. Be sure to watch your business and keep your guard up and this won't happen to you. drmary@drmary.net
