Baja Sky Tonight. From tonight to March 22, www.globeatnight.org needs 15 minutes of your time to help measure light pollution in Baja Sur. Light pollution is public or private artificial light that shines onto another person's property or into the surrounding desert, sea, or sky at night. Most outdoor light covers do not prevent light pollution and need retrofits. Obviously, bare bulbs are the biggest offenders. Light pollution wastes energy, is detrimental to human health and sleep, confuses wild animals, blots out stars, impairs night vision, makes astronomical research more difficult, and actually lessens home security. Here is how to participate in the project in just 15 minutes:

1) Find your latitude and longitude from a smart phone, GPS unit, Google Earth, or the tool at the above web site.

2) Between 8-10pm tonight or any night up to March 22, make a map of the stars you see in the constellation Orion.

3) Match your map with one of the 8 magnitude maps of Orion at www.globeatnight.org on the REPORT page, and

4) Enter information about nearby outdoor lights, cloud cover. etc., and then click on SUBMIT DATA. That's it.

Repeat the procedure on other evenings or for other locations if you wish. Instructions are given in Spanish at the website. Later in the year you will be able to retrieve a world map of the results of all observations, including yours, and use it to help reduce light pollution here.
