     Baja Sky Tonight. While clouds covered the night sky, Venus and Jupiter have traded places in the western sky after sunset, and now Venus is headed higher each evening towards the faint open star cluster known at the Pleiades or Seven Sisters. Venus loop back west and on June 5, 2012, will make a rare six-hour transit across the face of the sun. This will be visible throughout North America and only the 7th transit seen by human beings. They occur in pairs eight years apart, then more than a century goes by until the next pair of transits occur. Transits have occurred for eons, but Kepler first predicted them in 1631. In 1769 the Spanish sent astronomers to San Jose Del Cabo, Baja , to observe the transit of that year, and to use the results to make the first accurate estimate of the distance and size of the sun and the size of the solar system. An unfortunate French astronomer went to India to see the 1761 transit but clouds prevented viewing it. He hung out in Madagascar for eight years waiting for the 1769 transit and got skunked again. He went mad, but recovered and returned home only to find that his wife had remarried and his estate divided up among his children. If you missed the 2004 transit, don't miss this one. There won't be another one for 105 years. It will occur as the sun sets. You will need eclipse glasses to protect your eyes. They can be purchased online for around $6, and can be used to look at sunspots, and view the annular eclipse of the sun on May 20, 2012. More about that later.
     Iridium Flare. Tonight (Sunday) there will be a moderately bright flare at 7:26pm in the northern sky, one fist to the right of true north and half way from horizon to zenith.

If you have time, take a look at Orion between 8 and 10pm and file a report at the above web site. Thanks to everyone who turned off outdoor lights, unplugged Christmas lights, and unscrewed bare bulbs. The night sky is already darker. There should be more stars visible for the survey when the clouds clear off. Wednesday is the last night data will be accepted.
