Found on Tuesday: Small black dog with white star on her chest. She has longish hair and has a very sweet temperament and is very loving. She is approximately 6 months old. She was picked up on the beach road close  to Memo's Construrama wandering aimlessly.  She has been well taken care of as she is not thin and has a shiny black coat and has been recently bathed. She smells GOOD! We know that someone is missing her a lot, so if you have heard of anyone looking for their friend, please contact me at 624-130-0340 or bajakittykat@aol.com .   Thanks. There are two sweet female dogs in our neighborhood that have been abandoned and are looking for a new home. I've attached photos of them here. If you or someone you know might want to adopt them, please let Melani Hillman know at the following address: casaremel@gmail.com I've also copied her on this email. We know that there are hundreds of dogs looking for homes around here, but these two are special dogs that have a great disposition. If you could help us find them a home we would sincerely appreciate it. I'll throw in a free 40 lb bag of dog food.
Sincerely,  Dawn Pier & Melani Hillman

Daytime Sky Events to put on your calendar for this summer.

(1) There will be a partial eclipse of the sun lasting about 2 hours in the late afternoon of May 20, 2012, from Baja Sur to northwestern Canada. However, along a 100-mile-wide path extending from Eureka in northern California through Oroville, Reno, Las Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Bryce Canyon, the Four Corners area, Santa Fe, and Albuquerque, the new Moon will swing in front of the sun to cover 88% of its surface creating an annular eclipse of the sun that will leave just a ring of fire around the edge. Depending on your location and how far you are from the center of the eclipse path, the annular eclipse will last from 1 to 5 minutes. You can look at the exact path and a simulation of the event at http://earthsky.org/tonight/annular-eclipse-of-the-sun-for-southwestern-u-s-on-may-20. Even with 88% of the sun eclipsed, you can damage your eyes by staring at the sun for more than a split second without eye protection. Check online or at a local optical shop for "eclipse glasses." Sun glasses, DVD discs, smoked glass or grass, and mylar will not provide adequate protection. The next total eclipse of the sun in North America will occur August 21, 2017. It will sweep across the country from just south of Portland, Oregon, to South Carolina.

(2) Sixteen days after the eclipse there will be a rare transit of Venus across the sun. This will be only the 6th transit know to be viewed by humans. Most of North America will see the beginning of the transit in the afternoon and evening of June 5. The sun will set before the end of the 6-hour event. If you miss the transit fo 2012, you will have to wait more than a century for the next one. You will need those eclipse glasses again. They are also good for viewing sun spots. For Baja history buffs, a team of Spanish and French astronomers came to Baja sur in 1769 and set up observing sites near Cabo San Lucas and Real de San Antonio, near the present day San Antonio, in order to observe the Venus transit of that year. Of the 28 members on the scientific team, 20 died during the Baja part of the expedition.

ROAD REPORT

(1)  Via the Ventana View:  ROAD REPORT… just drove the baja road south, road was great, almost all the construction just south of Ensenada is finished, they were putting in a second layer in just a few last portions when I drove it, there was no stop and no off road excursions. As you get closer to Guerrero Negro there was only a 200 yard brief construction that you had to get off the road, it was well marked and not bad on a scale for trailers or RVs. And in Santa Rosalia the downtown is about to be repaved but you are going slow there anyway. and just south of Santa Rosalia is still under construction. They are building a jetty apparently for off loading whatever that new surface mine is producing. Also flew up to TJ and took the bus, if interested in that transportation node information I posted it on my site under travel by plane. www.la-ventana.info  why people are going north so early? It was cold rainy up in San Diego… dean

(2)   Road report 2, a way to get around some of the nightmare congestion in Ensenada…. I just drove the baja on a motorcycle. On a motorcycle to me I have better visibility and maneuverability in congested driving areas.. So I try new and different ways because it is painless to change route or backtrack if you do not like what you have entered. I did this in Ensenada going south not liking the main road. I continued on the malicon road much farther than I had in many years. Well they just opened a new malicon section that was great just keep on the water heading south and you will not be in the mad 8 lanes of traffic to the Wal-Mart area. I went to the last big sign that said to Buffador to the left. This puts you on the main road 1 heading south right before the Wal-Mart/ the waldos $1.00 store, so you just have a few lights. I did notice that just to the south before the Wal-Mart (could have been at the north side of the military base) there was a road many vehicles were turning there heading towards the water so that road may be a way all the way around the Wal-Mart section too. Only one caution right now on this malicon road there were no stop signs yet but at the major spots people were stopping like there was a stop sign. this will save you time and is a much more scenic less stressful route. They made a very nice malicon section there where it would be a nice place to just stop and eat your lunch and enjoy if you wanted a nice break. Plenty of parking. dean@la-ventana.com
