SKY WATCH.....
Baja Sky Events for May and June. On Sunday, May 20, observers along a 160 miles wide path from Northern California through Albuquerque, NM, will be able to watch an annular eclipse of the sun lasting from 1 to 4.5 minutes. In Baja Su,r the eclipse will be partial with less than half of the sun covered by the moon's disk. The only safe way to look at a partial eclipse safely is through CE certified Eclipse Glasses, filters, or #14 welding glass. Sun glasses and other makeshift filters will NOT PROTECT YOUR EYES from retinal burns. A pinhole in an index card will project an image of the sun onto another card held about two feet from the first card. However, the image will be quite small. If you have a telescope, Google "Sun Funnel" for directions adapting the scope to project an image on tissue paper or special projection paper. In Baja Sur, the maximum part of the eclipse will occur around 7:30 to 7:50pm. Since this is close to sunset, any mountains to your west will block your view. The Sun Funnel is probably the best way to view the transit of Venus across the face of the sun on June 5th. This transit will be visible in Mexico, the USA, and most of Canada. On June 5, for viewers in Baja Sur, the first contact of Venus with the upper right portion of the sun will occur about 4:06:34pm. Venus will be inside the sun's disk around 4:24:05pm and reach the midpoint of its transit around 7:25:25pm. The sun will set before the transit is complete. Since astronomers came to San Jose Del Cabo in 1769 to time the second transit of that decade, check with the cultural center there to see if anyone is planning a reenactment. A plaque at the center commemorates that event. Pacific Daylight Time for the transit in the USA and Canada is an hour earlier.

c.  More questions about carry-on-kennel reqiurements. Just flew in yesterday (without a dog) and went to the "animal office" in terminal 1 and asked about the new "no in-cabin dogs except service animals" policy. The three people in the office looked at me as if I was crazy. They had never heard of the policy and suggested it might be an American requirement. We then asked at the airline ticket counter and they had heard of the policy, but did not know when or if it would start following it. Anybody know how to get a firm answer. Would hate to fly an animal into Mexico only to find I could not fly it out. (some airlines embargo animals in cargo during the summer.) Please post answers in BPE.
