October 18, 2012 The city of La Paz has announced an aggressive spray program in the hopes of averting an outbreak of Dengue fever. Fumigation by malathion will be increased in the evening hours in select neighborhoods. In the past public announcements of neighborhoods to be sprayed has appeared in advance on the radio and newspapers, but this isn't much use to gringos who are espanol illiterate. Following the double hurricane hit in 2003 Dengue reached near epidemic proportions in Baja Sur.
Residents have been urged in the media to clean up standing water in their yards, to make sure their tanacos (water cisterns) are bug proof . In the past the city has handed out little packets of sterilizer for these cisterns, of which nearly every home in La Paz has at least one. A couple of tablespoons of unscented bleach will also sanitize the tanks, but using bottle water following either treatment is recommended.
Again, this action is to avert an outbreak of Dengue following the wettest summer in La Paz in 26 years. Although Dengue is not usually fatal, the malaria like symptoms are no fun at all. Greg

For the past 6 weeks Julie and I have been looking for our next great adventure and through blind luck we came to a tiny place in Mexico called Los Barriles.  Everyone made our stay the very best it could be.  You all should be proud of who you are and the home you have.  We will be back and we hope to call Los Barriles our home.  We would like to thank everyone and to those of you that went out of your way to make us feel at home.  A special thanks to you for the food, the music and the love you gave to us.  To all of you, our love and thinks.  Jeff and Julie

I told Omar don't worry, I just have a feeling it will find its way back to us. My stolen 4-wheeler that is. For some reason I had been calm, perhaps it was intuition. But Omar was frustrated about it being stolen from our property, and right next to my office. Of course, if he hadn't taken that very well deserved day off, he would not have left me to my casual devices which resulted in my leaving the keys in it. That was more than three months ago, and our stolen 4-wheeler has indeed found its way back thanks to great happenstance and Omar's constant attention and keen eye. Who exactly stole it is in the hands of the authorities, but three Sunday's ago Omar was checking on another of our 4-wheelers at the mechanic shop in La Ribera (you can see why he deserves his days off!), when he spotted another customer with what he thought was our 4-wheeler, and quite sure about it because of its distinct rims. The bright yellow seats had been changed to green; the shark and the Naish stickers were removed, but their halos were still completely apparent. Omar bristled and was getting hot under the color when he realized indeed it was ours and he began the delicate conversation; no, the person in possession had not stolen it, but had bought it in Miraflores from the person who was likely the culprit. He was bringing it in for some servicing, and please, Omar, "I know your father, don't club me!" the man must have thought. Good sense prevailed of course (although I'm sure Omar did want to club him), and the buyer willingly cooperated with us and the police because he had purchased stolen goods and was clearly at risk of serious trouble himself. Intuition? Luck combined with hard work? Whatever the reason, the taken has been returned. Thanks for so many of you who felt bad about our missing 4-wheeler, and now you can share our happiness! Theresa

When 'Stormin' Norman' came ripping up the Sea of Cortez three weeks ago, we were just catching our breath from Hurricane Miriam, who was still laying down lots of rain on the East Cape and throughout Baja Sur. Most of the East Cape fleet was in the water, including our 'Awesome' and 'Too Awesome', as there was much demand for late September fishing and a particularly good tournament. The frightening and frustrating part of being in the water during hurricane season is created by these late season, fast moving storms; before we could call the loader and ready the trailers, the seas had bulked up and the onshore swell and surf break made pulling impossible. Palmas had gotten about 20 boats out and had to call it off. My crew, wet like drowned rats were considering their options when Captain Luis was hailed by another boat that they were heading for the Cabo Riviera Marina. THAT was our lifeline. Omar quickly called and ours were the last two boats of the 25 that they were able to accommodate. Many other boats had to make the brutal run in storm waters to La Paz to seek safety there. Partially completed with much more capacity being add, the Cabo Riviera Marina is a shelter from the storm; the marina's design, direction and approach for summertime storms and hurricanes is as good as it can be. For Awesome Sportfishing, we are grateful and appreciative to Cabo Riviera and its developers and send out a great thanks for providing a safe and reliable location for our valuable, floating assets. And, we just used the marina again in the past few days for this very late and unexpected forceful Hurricane Paul.  Theresa

THUMBS UP - ANSWERS - DISCUSSIONS- This category must have name & email address.

a.  New restaurant in La Paz with delicious and healthy menu. One block up from the Malecon on the corner of Juarez and Belizario Dominguez you'll find the Maria California restaurant. We were a little surprised they were only open for breakfast and lunch with such an extensive cocktail menu but they explained that they will soon be open for dinner also. I had a great salad but they have omelets, sandwiches soups and traditional Mexican fare as well. www.mariacaliforniarestaurant.com 612-122-7926. ¡Buen Provecho!

ROAD REPORT

a.  (written 10-21-12)  Arrived Buena Vista 8.30 pm Sunday. We took our usual 24 hours drive time down the Baja ; no delays, no detours. We crossed the occasional arroyo or puente that had already been re-graded. All in all a very nice drive; few trucks over this weekend (sadly not a lot of RV's either), beautiful greenery. What could be better?  Sam and Deb
