The Lord of the Wind windsurfing and kiteboarding competition is once again heating up in Los Barriles. Who will be crowned Lord of the Wind on January 13, 2013? After three days of racing, jumping, trick competition and general good times our champion will be crowned.

Lord of the Wind is presented by the Rotary Club of Los Barriles Cabo Este and all proceeds will stay in the East Cape to continue the good works of Rotary. This year’s events will be Slalom, Free Style, Big Air and the mother of all races, The Lord of the Wind open competition.

Last year the event featured some of the world’s best kiters and windsurfers and this year’s events promise more of the same. Kiteboarding is the newest Olympic sport qualifying for competition in Brazil and some of our competitor’s will be honing their skills with an eye for a gold medal.

All activities will be held on the beaches of Los Barriles and night time activities will be hosted by Van Wormer Resorts. Some of the legendary evening activities include a bikini contest, dinners and rocking bands. Van Wormer Resorts has made possible some rad discounts for hotel stays.

Be part of this fun exciting event and join us on the beaches Jan 11th –Jan 13th 2013 as the challenge will again be taken up by our great athletes for the title Lord of the Wind.

Windows 8 will be release date is October 26. You will begin to see some great deals on Windows computers as we approach that date. Manufactures and retailers will be trying to get rid of the old stock in anticipation of the new systems. Windows 8 will be far different that previous systems. So, if you an old fashioned kinda person looking for a deal, now may be the time. I recommend this site to find some great deals: http://dealnews.com/
IOS 6 is the newest operating system for the Ipad 2&3, Iphone 3GS through newer phones as well as the newer ITouch. Initial reports are not all favorable. Most notable are shorter battery life, maps and navigation to the wrong place (like that's never happened before???), maps with a strange look, missing "YouTube" app and missing Google Maps. YouTube and Google Maps are or should be soon available as a separate app. Google and Apple had a serious falling out over the Iphone and Android phones. You will continue to see that divide grow larger. Iphone 5 ships with IOS 6 as the only option.
I haven't mentioned it in a long time. If you don't have a back up strategy, you may loose all your data. Hard drive failures rarely give a warning!!!

As we get ready to head south, it's time to think about calls back to the US. I have used most of the available Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) systems available including Ooma, Vonage, Magic Jack and Skype. This summer I permanently switched to Ooma from Vonage after a year testing both in LB & Tahoe. Now, I just move the box with me when I change locations. One number for everyone to contact me. Ooma is rated #1 by Consumer's Report comparing VOIP and hard line systems. I ported my number from Vonage to Ooma, that was a major undertaking but that process has been streamlined now. The Ooma box is available from a variety of sources including Costco USA. I saw it in Costco USA for $130 last week. That one time fee covers the cost of Ooma basic service for life; but, they pass on the utility taxes (app $5 monthly) to you the customer. As I side note, I still use the AT&T Viva Mexico cell phone plan.
Magic Jack App - If you have an Ipad, Iphone or ITouch, you can add the Magic Jack app to that device for free. Works on Android systems as well. You can then make free calls to the US. Downside, no one can call you on that app. One way only. But, it's free!!!
Cables - You may need to stock up on cables before you head to Mexico. HDMI cables can cost $30 plus in Costco USA while Amazon and monoprice.com have the same cables at significantly cheaper prices. There is virtually no benefit to the more expensive cables in the digital world. Different story for audiophiles that are in the analog world.
If any of the above seems like Greek, email me your individual questions?

Here is a link to a video about La Paz and some of the areas south of La Paz, including Los Barriles. It is a bit long, 14.5 minutes, and a bit commercial. However, it is nicely shot and should be pleasing and certainly informative to most of your company and to us locals as well. Bill Barbour
