Post Amistad Award Presented by Char Wenger
For those in attendance and especially to those who
missed a very special evening I would like make a statement about
this very special honor presented by Rotary. As one of 2
chosen for the 2013 Amistad Award, recognizing our outstanding
contributions to the community, I found myself almost speechless in
front of a large crowd of supporters.
A special gratitude to my beautiful co-recipient,
Francis Olachea, for her obvious dedication to her wonderful family
and work with the Children's Summer Program, Women's Guild and
Association of Arts. A special thanks for those working behind
the scenes with the organization, technical support, set up and
break down of the event, creating a seamless evening.
The night was touching and so special to share with my
East Cape Health Center Medical and Dental teams and volunteers.
BUT, most importantly, behind any "strong woman with a cause" is
a
wonderful patient and tolerant man on the home front. Thank you
Jim Wenger for allowing me to be what I need to be and do what I
do everyday to make this place where we live, vacation and play
more safe and secure.

Baja Night Sky: The Winter Hexagon,
Orion, the Pleiades, Canopus, and Jupiter, which were in the
east after nightfall in November, are now in the west after
dark. Look northeast after 9pm to find the Big Dipper. The arc
of its handle points across the sky to Arcturus, third brightest
star. If you have a very dark sky and a pair of binoculars,
there is a spiral galaxy just below the point half-way between
the last two stars of the Dipper's handle, at the point where
the two stars and the galaxy form an equilateral triangle. It's
a fuzzy spiral the size of the moon in binoculars. Seven to 10 x
50 binoculars open up the night sky to hundreds of star
clusters, nebula and galaxies to look at. Smaller sizes work
also. They are better than a cheap telescope; anything less than
about $300. If you're headed home soon, you can still take
another look at stars not visible farther north. The Southern
Cross stands upright just above the southern horizon between
12:30am and 1:30am this week. Rigil Kentaurus, the brightest of
the two stars just east of the base of the cross, is the fourth
brightest in the sky and closest of any star to our solar system
at just 4 light years. Sweep the area with binoculars and you
will discover a jewel box of Milky Way treasures. By 2am,
Scorpius, standing on its stinger with its head pointed at
Saturn, is low in the southeast, with Spica to the planet's
right. If you're awake that late, and your view to the south is
not blocked by walls, lights, or clouds, check the region out.
Iridium Flares return Monday evening. There will be two
at the same spot, 2˝ minutes apart, the second brighter than
anything in the sky. Look for them at 7:36:51pm and 7:39:26pm
high in the southeast sky (10 seconds later in LB, 20 seconds
later and extremely bright in Cabo).
You've probably read about the O2Amp
glasses ($302 at Amazon) that enhance color vision.
Serendipitously, they also correct red-green color
blindness that almost 1 in 10 men have. A colorblind Baja Night
Sky reader discovered that wearing O2Amps under polarized sun
glasses enables you to see the stars in the daytime sky. It
looks like there will be no need to give up stargazing for Baja
night life. Leave it for no-wind days. With your O2s you can
check out stars otherwise lost in the light of day. I'm
already working on the first edition of Stars of the
Baja Day Sky for November. On a personal note, I
apologize to my birthday girl for hiding a romantic full Moon
behind the clouds last week. I admit it was a slip up on my part
and it won't happen again. Also, apologies to Air-Man Oh (who
seems to defy the laws of physics when kiting) for not
reporting his discovery two weeks ago of a variable, short
period, white and red double supernova. We were looking at the
night sky from my roof-top observatory in El Sargento when
Air-Man Oh spotted the two stars exploding into view on the
southeast horizon just above the road from Bahia de Los Muertos.
Imagine our excitement! Sometimes the supernovae were a blinding
blue-white and other times tail-light red with a small Doppler
shift that Air-Man Oh caught on his iPhone. Finally, I am sorry
to report that this will be the last regular Baja Sky
until November. I'm flying to Houston to write and personally
deliver a weekly Galaxy Night Sky to crew members
of the Space Station. NASA thinks it will sharpen their critical
thinking skills as they try to separate fact from fiction.
Until then, I remain, Yours Somewhat Truthfully. Tom S. AFD,
APRIL 1, 2m13.
(Thank you Tom and "see" you in November
)

a. A big thank you to all the young people who
provided "free hugs" Saturday, late afternoon. They were
all lined up on 20 Novembre in Los Barriles wearing signs
that said "abrazos gratis" or "free hugs". We were on our
quad so available to get all those hugs and it was a nice
start to the evening. What a great community we live in.

Does anyone know of a device (or a service person that
would) that will receive a TelCel signal and rebroadcast it to a
location about 500 meters away. I have a remote property that I
receive a Telcel signal on top of a hill but I need to redirect the
signal to my house to the bottom of the hill approx 500 meters away.
